4.0 out of 5 stars Good assistant, but It doesn't know EVERYthing, September 3, 2006
This review is from: Dead Rising(tm) Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)) (Paperback)
Greetings,

This guide gives what it advertises - detailed maps, weapons list, how to get the endings, bosses strategies, and a comprehensive walk-through.

The "problem" with this guide stems from the gameplay of Dead Rising.

Dead Rising is like a chose-your-own-adventure story. The player can chose his own path.

The game guide offers (what it believes to be) the BEST path to solving all the cases and rescuing all of the characters.

This means, if the player choses to go against the guide, he might encounter a situation that isn't explained in the magazine.

For instance, I tried to save to female characters. A split second after they "joined" my group, the two ladies literally dropped dead. They just fell over and died for no apparent reason.

The guide offered no explaination. It only stated how to get the ladies to join. There is no mention to consquences too early, too late, or if another person had to have been saved beforehand.

There strategies for defeating some of the bosses that aren't mentioned in the book. The advice the book gives does work. However, I was able to find much better methods through my own gaming experience (and a little advice from GameFAQs website).

All in all, I recommend buying this guide. It is very helpful.

However, use the guide to assist you. Don't take its advice as the gospel.

Finally, it is almost impossible to win the game from start to finish on your first try. In fact, I highly recommend that you replay the first day's events at least seven times. Unless you are a master gamer, there is no way you are going to win the game without doing a lot of leveling up first. Guide or No Guide.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a great walkthrough... but not a great guide., October 16, 2006
This review is from: Dead Rising(tm) Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)) (Paperback)
I love Dead Rising but I wanted to know everything about the game so I got the strategy guide. When looking though the guide I found everything I needed to know and even more, but I soon found that not everything that I needed was in this book (It might be in the book, but it's not easy to find)

The guide starts off pretty good it shows you the controls, moves, characters and story. Next it brings you into a walkthrough that practically tells you actually what to do from who to save, when to take picture, what item you need and where to get them on your way there. It's a very nice walkthrough, tells you everything you need to know.

The only thing that bugs me is at the end of the guide, where they have the list of all the weapons, books, and food items. For instant, the weapons, if you want to know where the BATTLE AX is located it doesn't tell you, but you can find them mention where to grab the BATTLE AX in the walkthrough, so now you have to go searching of it in the walkthrough. Same thing goes for the book they tell you exactly what the book does, but never tells you which book store it's located in. If they just added a map of where all the weapons and book are I would have given it 5 stars.

It's still a good guide but its better as a walkthrough then a guide. And as I mention before, it dose have everything but it's hidden in the walkthrough which you don't really have time to search, since every second counts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Riddled with mistakes, July 30, 2010
By
This review is from: Dead Rising(tm) Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)) (Paperback)
Thank God Greg Off and BradyGames is not doing the Dead Rising 2 guide. Hopefully Capcom fired BradyGames.

This book is riddled with errors.

The Official guide confusingly misnames several weapons:

1. Meat Cleaver incorrectly named a "Chinese Cleaver"
2. Machete incorrectly named a "Combat Knife".

* The official guide incorrectly calls ovens "ranges", despite the game announcing a "Cooked in Oven Bonus" every time Frank uses the oven.
* The guide also states there are 7 "ranges" (ovens), when there are actually 9 ovens.
* The guide states that there are 6 stoves when there are only 5.
* According to several store overhead announcements, the shopping center was just about to celebrate its third anniversary. But in the bio of Otis Washington, the official Dead Rising Guide incorrectly states "Otis has been working at the Willamette Mall since it first opened in the early '80's."
* The official guide misspells Barbara "Babara" on page 120.

Keep in mind to get a lot of these pp bonuses, like the oven and stove bonus, you need a correct number, so an accurate number is important.

Poor advice:
* Regarding Gil Jiminez (the drunkard), the Official Guide offers this unnecessary advice: "Unequip your weaponand hit Gil until he decides to talk to Frank again. Even after another attempt at convincing him to come with Frank, Gil declines." This is unnecessary, as many guides will tell you, all you need to do is walk away.
* The guide also fails to mention the 10,000 prestige point photo opportunity in the section on Gil, and many of the other photo opportunities.
* The guide lists both the red cabbage and the cabbage, when they are exactly identical except for color. Yet the guide does not mention the different kinds of milk, cooking oil, cookies, snacks and wine, which are also found throughout the mall as well as being in Seon's Food and Stuff, and have identical properties to the Seon's Food and Stuff food except for superficial appearance like the two cabbages.

There are more, I will update this list as I find them. Online guides say there are 100 prestige point stickers, but the guide says there are 99. Not sure who is correct.

The strategy guide is great!! It is a lot of help for saving time and tips for defeating all the psychopaths. It has a lot of characters that I haven't been able to find playing in the game. It helped me finally beat the game!! Can't wait to go back through and find all the stuff I missed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice book! has all you need, August 19, 2006

Firstly, WOW! what a game..... I have played this for hours and hours on end!

How they can say this game has nothing to do with the remaro movie is beyond me! as this is exactly what it is, with the only exception being the missions!

Anyway to the book, I am actually in the process of buying it, but have been using my friends book for a bit!

It has everything for all the missions, INCLUDING the scoop missions. Its well put together, including some very nice pictures.

If you are a fan of the game, then this is a must buy and its CHEAPER to buy it here, than to even buy it bundled with the game or seperately!

cant complain at $10 for new!

it rocks and you wont be let down, just settle back, read it and then onto the zombie bashing!

5 outta 5

Jason, "DeVoiD".

3.0 out of 5 stars Seems pretty good, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Dead Rising(tm) Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)) (Paperback)
Like all strategy guides, you should be careful about reading too far into it before playing, unless you don't care about spoilers. Seems obvious, but you know how people can be.

By the way, this game is very similar in setting to Romero's film, but really, that's where the similarities end. Dawn of the Dead was about multiple survivors trying to escape from Zombies, and had nothing to do with a reporter trying to get a story. Yes the setting is similar, but the story told in Dead Rising is very different from the story told in Dawn of the Dead.
