This book does an outstanding job of following David Jackson Logan's life during the Civil War, through letters to his wife and family, letters to the newspaper, and his diary. I am fortunate to have already known what an outstanding man David Jackson Logan was, as well as, his father, John Randolph Logan, and his siblings. Especially David's brother Ben F. Logan, my great-great grandfather. I hope everyone enjoys reading this incredible book.

This was precisely the kind of book I was hoping existed, one that would give a detailed and intimate description of the Petersburg siege, leading up to July 2, 1864, the day that a Yankee sharpshooter ended my G-Grandfather's life. David Logan gives information that goes beyond the ordinary plans and purposes of battle. He was a caring and capable leader of his men, of whom my relative was one. I read with enthusiasm his accounts of the war, and I was excited when I found that he gave the names and some of the circumstances of those who died under his command. This was what I had been looking for. You can imagine my disappointment when the book ends, and I learned that Yankee sharpshooters ended this young officer's life just two weeks before they got my G-Grandfather! He apparently was in the process of warning his men in the trenches to stay low so as to avoid being picked off, and raised himself up a bit too high. It was a very interesting read, anyway, and my search will continue, but Logan's articles and reports helped me gain some rare insight into the circumstances surrounding my ancestor's demise.
