4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and deep story of the Sword Coast
As a long time reader of each and every Forgotten Realms book, of late I have been disappointed with the quality of writting. 2.0 out of 5 stars Feels very much like part one of a trilogy
...and I sure hope the rest of it is better than this. Parts are intriguing, but all the human characters are cardboard, the plot almost seems too limited by its own place in the grander scheme, and a complete lack of continuity (no references to Kressilac or the Coral Kingdom) bring it down quite a bit. I'm sure it will be much better once all three books are read,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and deep story of the Sword Coast, February 2, 1999

This review is from: Rising Tide (Forgotten Realms: The Threat from the Sea, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
As a long time reader of each and every Forgotten Realms book, of late I have been disappointed with the quality of writting. Ed Greenwood's latest attempts with Elminster's tale have falled short of the mark Mel Odom's writting is both refeshing and very accurate to the history of the Sword Coast. What appeals to me is that fact that he does not try to squeeze too many things into one book. Or course knowing that he has 3 more to follow does help He does a very good job of taking 3 different "quests" and weave them into one. As a fan of the new Baldur's Gate CRPG, it was great to see cities and areas that I had just explored leap to life on the pages of his book A must read for any Forgotten Realms fan

Finally someone who understand and love (under)water world and knows how to put that love into words of a great story. I just cannot decide who I like best - Pacys the Taleweaver or Iakhovas the Evil Itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendously Exciting!, January 26, 2002
This review is from: Rising Tide (Forgotten Realms: The Threat from the Sea, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've read this book along with the other two in the trilogy and I found that it became harder to put it down as you become more deeply entranced in this breath-taking tale. You'll be captured right away and by the time it's over yearning for more. Fortunately, I read these books when they were all published so I didn't have to wait a year for the next book. So, weather you are or aren't a fan of the 'Forgotten Realms' I suggest reading and purchasing all three of the books in this trilogy together so they won't leave you hanging at the end. That's the beauty of discovering a good trilogy when all three of the books are already out. Read these books and you won't be disappointed. This is a fabulous book filled with all the nececsary elements needed to make a tale come alive and let you experience the adventure. I still can't decide which one I enjoyed most.

4.0 out of 5 stars decent book, January 18, 2004

This review is from: Rising Tide (Forgotten Realms: The Threat from the Sea, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked up this book because I was in the mood for a sea based adventure and in that respect it delivers. I kind of felt a love/ hate relationship for the two main characters. Jherek, the hero, is a mere boy who of course is destined to be an amazing hero who saves all of faerun (played out plot yawn) was annoyingly innocent. He did have my sympathy for his tendency to have bad luck. The other semi-villan Laaqueel a malenti (birth deformed saughin) was just plain annoying. The only thing she did through the whole book was pray to her god.
It was a decent enough book just because I was in the mood for the particular setting. I even picked up the rest of the series that is were things went downhill.

4.0 out of 5 stars At last a book with good fighting scenes, May 17, 2002
This review is from: Rising Tide (Forgotten Realms: The Threat from the Sea, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is probebly the first book i read that has good fighting scenes not some boring all to long fighting scenes the worst thing in this book was the relationship between Sabyna and Jherek
to much romance for my taste. But yet this book is one of the best i have ever read.

I live in Icland so im sorry if my english is bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to lose sleep when you buy this book., April 16, 1999

I have been reading fantasy books for a long time and have enjoyed them all, then I picked up my first book by Mr.Odom(The Raising Tide) and was reintroduced to the reason I originally started reading fantasy in the first palce. Mr. Odoms books captured my attention and kept me entrahlled untill the last page, I went out and bought his first book he wrote in the Forgotten Realms setting "The Lost Library of Cormanythyr" and it was just as good if not better then the first. I hope to see more of Mr. Odoms work in the very near future(After the Raising sun series of course!)I hope everyone enjoys Mr.Odoms work as much as I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!, July 11, 2000
This review is from: Rising Tide (Forgotten Realms: The Threat from the Sea, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Mel Odom has stumbled upon a very exciting and refreshing adventure for Jherek. The Sahauguin have raised an ancient evil and now head to the surface world to wage war. They attack Waterdeep and nearly destroy the entire city.

Meanwhile a young sailor named Jherek has his past catch up with him again and he is on the run once more. All the while he keeps hearing a strange voice calling to him in his mind. While an old bard treks to finish a song which will tell a great tale, it he can ever find out who the hero is.

This is an extremely well written book, and the setting is quite interesting. Though the Sword coast is not a new setting, under the sea is. The plot is deep and involved and pulls you right in from page one. This book is a great start to a fantastic Trilogy. Enjoy!
