From the Director
The best part of this project was meeting all of these fantastic women. Many of these women are good pilots, and smart competitors. Their equipment is state-of-the-art and very complete - the latest wings, harnesses, flight decks and flight computers. Typically, competitors would spend 5 or 6 hours on course, flying out-and-returns, or triangles, or races to goal - racing the clock and each other for position. I tried to capture, on film, what it was like for these women to compete day after grueling day to achieve the final reward.
To say these competitors are go-for-it types is to understate. A couple of moments were heart stopping. One pilot, realizing at the last moment that she reached the day's goal, but approached it from the wrong direction, had to make a very low 180 degree turn to properly cross the finish line. She does, but it was a slow turn, leaving her landing downwind with little airspeed. She took the resultant crash philosophically, saying if she's not willing to take risks, then she shouldn't try to compete.
I came away from this project incredibly inspired to recognize my own strengths, to just go for it, never give up, and always dare to achieve.
