Business Parable on Entrepreneurship
on November 7, 2012
I found Rick Cohen's "Risk to Succeed" book on essential lessons for discovering personal talents and finding success to be a quick read full of valuable business and leadership tips. Not only did he provide key concepts using the main story of Bella the Elephant and Cee the Butterfly, he also provided 8 more clever parables at the end of the book to make the reader think some more. My favorite parable related to risk taking was about crossing "The River." Key concepts presented by the story of Bella and Cee included: career planning, pursuing business ideas, being courageous, taking risks, visualizing success, creating a business plan (timeline), planning for problems and change, taking time to reflect, serving others, and learning continuously. In the last chapter of the main story, the mentor shares with the now successful entrepreneur this great advice "Never stop challenging life in each of the key areas: career, learning, and giving to others. Life is about living: not retiring." In the author's final thoughts at the end of the book, which is referred to as the "Book of Cee," Cohen emphasizes how an entrepreneur must embrace the ideas of self-love and personal character building to gain success and remain successful.
