From Booklist

Why do people climb mountains? For Canadian Jim Haberl, a professional mountain guide, climbing mountains has been his path to enlightenment. He shares unique stories of mountaineering summits, such as the famous K2 in Pakistan and Devil's Thumb in Alaska, and he elucidates what it takes to survive in challenging situations--for example, ski-mountaineering in a heavy blizzard through an untraveled area of the Himalayas. The book is most interesting when Haberl recounts firsthand his moments of emotional crisis, as when his best friend fell to his death after reaching the summit of K2, or when members of his climbing party in the Andes were downed by an avalanche of ice boulders the size of refrigerators. One clue to the appeal of this sport is to view the breathtaking photographs of peaks and glaciers. This book should interest readers of Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air [BKL Ap 1 97]. Brenda Barrera

3.0 out of 5 stars Great photos. Short stories make reader beg for more., September 5, 1998

The only thing lacking with this book is that the stories seem too short to fully capture the magnitude of Jim's trips. After reading Greg Child's "Thin Air" I was spoiled and expected to be drawn into adventures for more than the 1/2 hour it took me to read each chapter. It almost seems like these stories were written for National Geographic...

Worth reading, if not only to whet your appetite!

5.0 out of 5 stars Haven't read it yet., May 2, 1999

Canadian climber/photographer and author Jim Haberl was killed last week outside of Anchorage, Alaska. He is Alaska's twelfth victim of an avalanche this year. Interest in his book should increase and I am no exception. I especially want to read his book now that the thing he loved the most has claimed his life. He was 41 years old.
