Rit Color Remover contains a mixture of sodium hydrosulfite and sodium carbonate. It often works well to remove unwanted dye run stains, and it can also be used to make lovely designs in fiber art, as well. Be sure to buy enough packages, as you will need four boxes to run one extra-large washing machine load, three for a large load, or two for a medium-sized washing machine load.

Rit Color Remover is gentler to fabric than chlorine bleach (hypochlorite), and, unlike chlorine bleach, it rinses out completely, so there is no need for an additional step to neutralize it. In contrast, if you use chlorine bleach to remove dye, you must neutralize it afterwards with Anti-Chlor, Bleach-Stop, or hydrogen peroxide (never an acid such as vinegar!). Otherwise, the bleach will continue to eat away at the fabric, even after washing, and shorten the life of the garment. This is not an issue with Rit Color Remover, which does not need to be neutralized, only washed out.

There can be no guarantee that any type of dye remover will work. Some dyes simply cannot be discharged or bleached. Also, the underlying original color of the garment may or may not be affected. It is best to use Rit Color Remover to remove dye runs on colored garments only when it is worth risking removing the original color. That said, Rit Color Remover has saved many garments that would otherwise have been ruined.

For dye artists, Rit Color Remover allows 'reverse tie dye', by removing dye to leave light areas on a dark background, and provides mysterious looking and wonderful results in shibori. The famed shibori artist Carter Smith uses the same chemical as that found in Rit Color Remover for his discharge dyeing.

The package also claims that Rit Color Remover can be used on whites to remove stains such as fruit juice, ketchup, tea, and rust. It is safe for all fabrics that can be washed in hot water.

I use this every time I mess up my white clothes by mixing them in the washer with colors. The first couple of times I used this I was very disappointed because it barely removed the color. I tried it several times. Then my roommate suggested instead of using the washing machine method, to try the stove-top method and it works like a charm. This stuff has saved the lives of MANY of my clothes because I am spacey and keep throwing whites in the wrong wash. Most recently it even saved a very expensive custom-tailored white silk blouse that had turned green from washing with a green skirt.

Throw your items in the pot with the hot water and rit and within a few seconds the color is gone. I once had my entire collection of whites ruined by a red skirt that turned them all pink and they all turned back to white. Too bad it hasn't worked for all of you, but for me it has been a miracle product and life-saver and I can only urge you to try it again with the stove-top method. Good luck!

I was nervous about trying this product, so I thought I'd share my results for others to learn from.

I washed a new red sweat shirt with a fluorescent yellow sweatshirt, turning it an ugly orangeish/green. I was VERY hesitant to try this product because 1. I did not want to fade the fluorescent yellow and 2. The hoodie had a lot of paint, dark blue embroidery, and blue/purple appliques that I did not want to fad or bleed all over in the process of using the dye remover. I spent a long time debating whether or not to just live with it or risk the dye remover. Glad I went for it!

I kept the item soaking in water after noticing the stain, so as to not set it in. I think this was important. I used hot water and 2 packages in a small load, as per package instructions. I kept a close eye and as soon as it looked normal again, I set it to rinse.

It turned out perfect! One of the purple appliques may have faded a little, but other than that it looks about the same! It really did seem to remove the red dye and nothing else. I was so pleased!

I would totally recommend this product unless the item(s) you have could really reasonably be OK with the stain. I'm going to buy another couple of boxes to have on my laundry shelf, just in case I oopsie again!

I needed to remove dye from a hemp belt - to turn it from natural "light khaki" to white. I followed the instructions and used the stove - top method. It worked a treat - the colour started to disappear in few minutes and within a half hour I was left with a beautiful natural white hemp belt. A word of warning - make sure the kitchen is well ventillated or turn on the ventillation fan at max power - the fumes are not pleasant. After a hand wash in normal detergent the belt had no after-odor, so it was a complete success.

This is a great product. I have used it for years, dozens of times. It works well with really hot tap water in the kitchen sink. But here it's overpriced. No way a single box should cost almost $7.

This is a miracle product! I washed a white shirt needed for competition TOMORROW with a load of colors - and something red left hot pink all over the white shirt! Tried ammonia and dish soap soak in water as suggested in online search - nothing. Rewashed - nothing. ONE second in the stove-top method with Rit color remover and the shirt was completely white again! Carefully follow directions for stove-top method; it worked perfectly for us! I am a lifelong customer!!

I ruined a pair of off white pants that went with a suit. Washed it in with RED clothes and ended up with UGLY pink pants. I tried bleaching them with no help (Had run them through the dryer). I thought they were gone forever. Then I saw this and thought I'd at least try. They are back to a white color.

Note: When I opened the box I read that you need 2 or more packs if you are using your washer for this product, or a stainless steel pot and a wooden spoon, or stick, if you use a stove top.

Took me a while to decide what to do. I only had one pack and NO stainless steel pot or wooden spoon.

I used my stainless steel kitchen sink! I used hot water from the tap and filled just enough to slosh the pants around. I used a wooden skewer to move the pants around, as directed.

The color was gone in about 10 minutes, but I left it longer to make sure (20-25 minutes).

FYI the cloth in the pants I used the dye on had Lycra in them. They are a stretchy material.

Worked great! Make sure you follow the directions. You may need to re-dye your clothes later if it takes out too much color, the box says. Since mine were white to begin with I didn't have that problem. Good luck.

I used the stove top method and had desirable results in removing color from a white coat. The stove top method takes effort but the results were worth it.

This has got to be one of the most vile substances on earth, but man, if you use the stove top directions it can murder a stain in cold blood. We tried Oxy Clean, Oxy Clean and bleach, and then more bleach. The stain was hopelessly stuck. Then we grabbed a box of this 'stuff' at Walsmart and in about 25 minutes the stain was COMPLETELY gone. Very impressive.

After accidentally washing my expensive all white undergarments with something that had red in it, my undies turned pink. So I bought one package of Rit color remover for $1.63 plus tax at a local Wal-Mart. The directions say to use a steele pot vs an aluminum pot. I simmered my bras & undies in the solution as the directions stated. The Rit product worked perfectly! My garments are all stark white! But my undergarments smell so horrible from the Rit product that I can't wear them! Yuck!
I've soaked them in detergent, and washed them over and over. After about 5 soakings/washings, the smell is almost gone.

The local store also offered two other non-dye Rit products for $1.63 per box. A whitener and a brightener.
