Biography

Leon Russell wrote Joe Cocker's "Delta Lady" about her. She won Grammys with Kris Kristofferson. She had hits covering songs first made famous by The Temptations, Boz Scaggs and Jackie Wilson, and scored a new one for James Bond. She waxed "Superstar" before the Carpenters. Now the most expansive retrospective of her career, the two-CD Delta Lady: The Rita Coolidge Anthology (Hip-O Records),… Read more in Amazon's Rita Coolidge Store

Editorial Reviews

2008 digitally remastered two-fer from the '70s vocalist, the first two solo albums from the former Joe Cocker backing singer and session vocalist (and future Kris Kristofferson love interest): Rita Coolidge (1971) and Nice Feelin' (1972). Both albums made the US Top 200. Beat Goes On.

5.0 out of 5 stars Journey Through the Past, March 13, 2009
This review is from: Rita Coolidge/Nice Feelin (Audio CD)
Rita Coolidge's first 2 A&M albums on CD !! This represents some of her very finest work. Her debut is clearly unforgettable. Every cut is a winner. The vocals are strong, with alot of heart. "Ain't That Peculiar" is one of the best Motown covers ever recorded."Second Story Window" remains her truly very best. The songwriters and musicians are really first rate. Rita is singing songs worthy of her great voice.(Van Morrison, Neil Young, Booker T. Jones, among the writers) Second album "Nice Feelin' " is a little more mellow...and contains a rare moment ( Rita plays piano on Neil Young's "Journey Through The Past" !!)Rita's version of Dave Mason's "Only You Know And I Know" is better than Dave's,and Graham Nash's "Better Days" is awesome...but the heart of this album are the Marc Benno cuts ("Family Full Of Soul", and "Nice Feelin'")I also think this second album is one of Rita's favorites herself !
Thank you to BGO records for recognizing the UNDER RATED Rita Coolidge, with this great set, the booklet and expanded notes are fantastic ! This is a treasure for any Rita fan, and proves to all that Rita was a trail blazer for women in rock. Keep going Rita !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, December 30, 2009
This review is from: Rita Coolidge/Nice Feelin (Audio CD)
Ever have someone remember you for the worst thing you ever did? It is no fun. Ask a casual rock fan about Rita Coolage, and they will probably mention her soft rock take on Jackie Wilson's "You're Love Is Lifting Me Higher," taylor made for MOR late 1970s mush.

But Coolage was singing back up for Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton and Delaney and Bonnie and Leon Russel: that down home, early 1970s rustic blues rock was something Rita had a big hand in.

These first two albums-the very first produced by Brooker T Jones--mine that asthetic. She has two different bands on these respective discs, but both are top notch session aces who mine this organic early 1970s woody sound. There are ballads, and rock numbers, but this is long before Rita started taking on velvet and gloss.

Great albums good for fans of rock. Real rock

5.0 out of 5 stars MORE RELEASES BY RITA COOLIDGE- KEEP THEM COMING, March 15, 2009
This review is from: Rita Coolidge/Nice Feelin (Audio CD)
RITA COOLIDGE HAS ONE OF THE BEST VOICES IN MUSIC. SHE CAN SING IT ALL
COUNTRY, POP, ROCK, STANDARDS- ANYTHING. THESE ARE HER FIRST 2 RELEASES
AND THEY ARE RITA AT HER BEST. MOST OF THE SONGS ARE COVERS WHEN ACTUALLY RITA SINGS THEM BEST. THESE ARE THE RELEASES BEFORE RITA COOLIDGE MADE IT BIG IN POP MUSIC. I FIND THESE 2 RELEASES TO BE
RITA'S QUIET YEARS AND THEY SHOW THE PROMISE WHICH LEAD TO RITA'S
FAME. TO HAVE BOTH OF THESE ON 1 CD IS UNBELIEVEABLE. EVEN IN THESE EARLY RELEASES RITA SHOWED HER TALENT, CLASS, AND PERFECTION.
