5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ALBUMS, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rita Coolidge (Audio CD)
After hearing Rita sing "Superstar" on Joe Cocker's Mad Dog's and Englishmen album I was hooked on her voice. I bought this album not knowing anything about it. It blew me away. It's soulful, jazzy and delta sound it exquisite. The songs she picked were perfectly suited for her voice. "Second Story Window" and "I Always Called Them Mountains" are my favorite cuts. "Seven Bridges Road" and "That Man Is My Weakness" are up there as well. I've been waiting a long time for this album to come out on CD. I still like the sound from the vinyl but with a CD I can listen to it without any breaks. If you are a Rita Coolidge fan but have never had the opportunity to hear this album, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars mini-review of the song "second story window", July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rita Coolidge (Audio CD)
everything in the above review is true, but i'm amazed that no mention was made of the most beautiful song on the whole album, "second story window" a song by marc benno,a friend and collaborator of leon russell's. this song has stuck in my mind since i first heard it. it reminds us to not pay too much attention to what others think, say and do. it also reminds us that death is just a sequence of life that we all will be going through. rita is accompanied on double-tracked acoustic guitar by stephen stills. a most beautiful song, beautifully sung with an important message to take away. dr sluggo

5.0 out of 5 stars Her First, & most Bluesy Recording, June 27, 2002

Glad to see Rita Coolidges' first { actually there is a recording before this one, but I believe Rita hated it; it's never been released?? } album out on CD. I have to mention to anyone who buys this, that Rita's voice sounds almost identical to Bonnie Bramletts on this recording. The recording after this one she sounds like she does today. She backed up Delaney and Bonnie on their sessions. This is an excellent album, but my favorite of Rita's is "FALL INTO SPRING". I feel that is her best recording ever, and I'll be damned if I can find it anywhere. Hopefully one day it will come out on CD. She has one of the finest voices in pop music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rita at her best, December 20, 2001

This is one of those albums with no clinkers. Rita never matched this in later albums. I bought this record almost 30 years ago and am thrilled to have it back, sounding even better than I remembered. Incredible musicianship, back up vocals and songwriting from start to finish. I melt when I hear her voice wrap around the words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rita's Best., June 25, 1999

In her long recording career, Rita Coolidge has yet to top this, her 1971 eponymous debut. Rita moved much too quickly from a soulful Southern rocker to an adult contemporary hit maker to suit me. Her later, more radio friendly work brought her several hit singles, but they don't hold up as well as the timeless songwriters whose work she covered here. Her version of the Marvin Gaye hit, "Ain't That Peculiar", is just about the best cover of a Motown classic I've ever heard. There are many highlights here: "Born Under a bad Sign", written by her brother-in-law Booker T. Jones; Van Morrisons "Crazy Love" Otis Redding's "The Happy Song" Neil Young's "I Believe in You" two excellent Donna Weiss songs, "That Man is My Weakness" and "Mud Island" and a beautiful cover of the Eagles' "Seven Bridges Road". Rita's voice has never been stronger, and she sounds great covering the many varied styles she does here. An excellent debut album that showed a lot of promise that she never quite lived up to. She should have kept rockin'. Highly recommended.
