A promising gem from Brazil,

I stumbled on Rita Ribeiro through Putumayo's "Acoustic Brazil" compilation. Having always been in tuned to Samba, the earthier the better, I was immediately enthralled. "Lenha" is where it starts off for me. Transported am I to some cool dusk on Copacabana beach, as she croons away, seemingly on all the promises that belie an evening in tropical Brazil. Did I mention that I do not understand a whit of Portuguese."Divino" is positively spiritual. I hear voices ancient and modern, souls struggling against the crushing of humanity, all emanating solemnly from her bosom. When that song ends on its calm note, give it a pause and breathe. Have a Caipairinha. And then listen to "Tem Que Queira". Sway your body to it and join in that marvel of pure unadulterated joy that can come from only one place--wondrous Brazil. The CD has other gems too, but enough of me describing it. Take the plunge and discover it for yourself. |
