Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

As its title indicates, this book strongly argues against the use of the drug Ritalin in the treatment of attention deficit disorder (ADD). The key to the authors' viewpoint lies in Chapter 3, headed "An Epidemic of ADD or a Matter of Overdiagnosis?" They point out that children, like the rest of us, live in "an extremely overstimulated society," with Nintendo replacing outdoor play, movies and TV stressing violence, and beepers providing instant and overly urgent communication. Children respond to the resulting stresses differently from adults and accordingly require different treatment. Because the authors are homeopathic physicians, they not unexpectedly prefer homeopathic solutions to the problem?a "whole person approach" that in some cases may be combined with traditional treatments. In any event, they make a reasonably convincing case for the idea that drugs can be both misapplied and overused and that chemical panaceas are not always the best answer. 5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for those looking for a safer alternative!, September 24, 1998
By A Customer
Excellent, concise, easy to follow. If you have a child who's behavior is causing you and their teachers/caregivers concern (whether it's ADD/ADHD or not), or that their personality is just too much to handle at times (too intense, obsessive, easily overwhelmed etc), or you are adverse to the possibility of your child having to take Ritalin etc, this book is a must read! We have taken our daughter to a naturopatic physican for over a year now, and the treatment she has received has made all the difference in the world! This book will change your life (and that of your child/children).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for intermediate homeopaths, July 18, 2001
I've been using/studying homeopathy for 8 years. Using homeopathy is not a quick fix, and you will find that it may be necessary to use different remedies over a period of time as you start eliminating symptoms. With 1 child on the autistic specturm and another child with dyslexia and ADHD, I can say that you have to also include dietary changes and behavior modifications, and various necessary therapies. I found homeopathy an aide to these therapies. In the past 2 years both children have improved so much, that I actually had to argue with the school that my high functioning autistic child was still autistic but the symptoms are more subtle. He has never been on any medications. My ADHD child is on Zoloft, which helped tremendously with his anxiety. With homeopathy remedies, he no longer tantrums, he's patient, has great long term memory and completes long term tasks with wonderful focus. This book has helped me find the other not used very often remedies to deal with the impulsivity and his slow response to auditory information. It might be that he will always need traditional medication for a chemical imbalance for his anxiety. I find the homeopathics help excelerate the healing process in both my children. This book is the best I've found so far, in eliminating the remaining individual symptoms of ADHD. Last year they were going to put my child on Ritalyn, now the Psychiatrist feels that it's not needed anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifesaving!, March 31, 2005
As the mother of four young children, I realized when one of my children was very young that he was an extremely high-energy, precocious bundle of energy. I found this book at my local library when I was trying to educate myself about the implications of ADHD, yet he was only three or four, so we waited a few more years before actually seeking treatment. Early on in our research, my husband and I agreed that we would do anything possible to improve his well-being without resorting to drugs. After a year under Dr. Reichenberg-Ullman's care, my seven year-old son has improved tremendously! Homeopathic treatment does not happen overnight, and it requires patience, and in our case, the first remedy did not make significant enough improvement, so we tried another, which has been nothing short of amazing! PLEASE READ THIS BOOK IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW IS DEALING WITH ADD/ADHD. Not only does the book include many case studies and real-life examples, I felt that it provided an overview of ADD/ADHD symptoms, conventional medications, and introduction to homeopathy. I have several copies that I loan to my son's teachers, coaches and family friends.
