Ritchey Logic 1" Threaded Black Headset 26.4 crown

Early this spring, as part of a restoration/upgrading project, I put a Ritchey Logic !" Black Threaded Headset on my trusty 1992 GT Richter8.0, a former mountain bike that is now doing pretty much exclusively paved trail and road duty, with high pressure slick tires, close ratio road style gearing and some long-ish bar ends mounted inboard of the brake levers to provide a more aero-efficient riding position for when the wind (or my speed...) picks up. It seems to be well made, looks good, installed easily, seems well sealed, and after an initial settling period, has held it's adjustment nicely. I opted to use a greater number of high quality loose balls in lieu of the provided caged ones, in an effort to increase contact area, because I've had problems with headsets developing the "index steering" pitted race problems before.

Unfortunately that precaution seems to have been a wasted effort, because now, about 9 months and 4000 miles later, I've got as bad a case of "index steering" as I've ever had. Now, admittedly, I do ride a lot more than most people, and the majority of it is on straight flat roads. For the price especially, this is a decent headset, and in a pinch I wouldn't have a problem with buying it again, or recommending it to a more casual rider. Since I plan on keeping this bike basically forever though, personally I'm springing for a better headset, one with needle roller bearings.
