Nice Blade, Great Value!,
This review is from: Rite Edge - SZ901120 , GURKHA SERVICE KUKRI 17in. W/SHE (Misc.)
Its a surplus gurkha Service Kukri imported through rite-edge..
has a large, heavy, polished and functional carbon steel blade..which of course would make an excellent tool for heavy chopping/ brush clearing work, etc.. But they do need sharpening as the edge comes very dull/blunted for shipping/importation reasons (there are a couple great info sites on how to file, sharpen and improve these..Google search 'kukri field knife' and 'survival primer kukri' to find them). The knife came separately wrapped in plastic with a coat of oil or grease on it, so I cleaned and degreased it with windex/fantastic, a cheap reddish wood dye does come off, but looks better now imo ..then i applied pledge wax furniture polish to the handle and a light coat of gun oil to the blade for protection. ..the sheath is decent and functional though not great ,but can be improved upon ..the two smaller knives(karda and chakmak) are pretty shoddy(as expected) though somewhat usable..the karda(tiny utility knife) also needs sharpening for use,and the chakmak is kept dull for steeling (realigning) the sharpened edge(though I don't use either, those are more decorative to me). So overall if you'd like a real Khukuri(either as a tool or keepsake) at an affordable price here it is.

This seems more like a working knife, or maybe survival/heavy-camping knife than a combat weapon.
It would also look good on a wall, table or mantel, properly mounted. It comes unsharpened, but I would imagine, once fully-sharp, could do anything a good hatchet could do, and more. The scabbard is solid, but the knife fits it a bit too loosely for wearing on a belt while on a hike or slogging thru wilderness--It could be modified with a piece of plastic jammed down to the inside bottom of the scabbard to create some friction/holding action on the sheathed blade. In any case, with a little creative rigging, it could likely be remedied. I'm not sure where it was made, since there is no indication on the blade, handle or scabbard. But it *looks* pretty Nepalese in design (to my novice eye). It could very possibly be Indian Army Surplus, but I can't be sure. Nevertheless, once sharpened, rest assured this is the real thing, as far as functionality goes. Great for display too.. Probably would hold up to some fairly heavy outdoor use, I would imagine--Especially if you're a goat-herder or farmer at 8,000 feet elevation in the Himalayan Foothills.

This is pretty much an axe.Not a machete. DO NOT BUY THIS THINKING THAT IT IS A MACHETE. It weighs too much to work for brush clearing and an actual machete would be alot better.
Anyways, this blade came very dull. Once I had it grinded down, it worked fine. Oddly, my blade has some sort of oil burned into it, but that came out with some Gasoline. But, on with the review. This blade is full tang, and the tang is as thick as the blade. it cuts wood nicely and I actually used it to cut large pieces of wood into shorter lengths while out camping. It would probably work well as a weapon, but that's not really something I would need to use it for. Buy this. now.

"The knife came just as advertised. Heavy blade but dull like other purchasers stated. Mine is being sharpened by a friend that makes custom knives so I don't mind. The sheath is cheap but for the price I don't care. "

Good kukri for the price. Completely dull though, going to have to put an edge back on it. The handle is also massive. Hard to beat the price though.

Ordered this item on the 1st and received it on the 3rd. In terms of shipping and handling, I give 5 stars. When it comes to product quality, it could be much better. The first thing is the sheath. The seams are completely ripping apart and the brass tip has too many imperfections on it. The metals studs on the belt loop were also rusted. This is all after opening it and looking at it. Another observation was that the sheath was very dusty, almost as if it has not been touched in months. After actually trying to use the sheath, I realized the blade does not fit snugly and moves around too much when walking. The blade itself was also bad. The metal portion on the handle was starting to rust and the metal was not completely finished properly. It has "pointy" areas making the blade quite uncomfortable to hold. The two service knives were a joke. There was absolutely no quality control with them and they were completely useless. These are the reasons for the below-average rating.

Great knife, great chopper! But I wouldnt bother if you don't have access to a table-top grinder with a guide and a fine grind wheel. I grinded mine down to a 30 degree angle on both sides. Chops branches like nothing. This will be replacing my machete AND my soft-metal hatchet for future outdoor excursions.
Seriously though, why no quick re-sharpen when it got to the US? At least give the buyer SOMETHING to work with, mine had a completely flat edge(and they probably removed 1/4" of the blade in the process).

So, first off this thing is a serious blade. Full tang about 3/8 thick down through the handle. The one i recieved was made in Pakistan, i'm not sure if they all are or not. In my opinion this is a very high quality blade that will withstand anything i can possibly throw at it. It shipped wrapped seperately from the sheath and the other blades. It was coated in a cosmoline like substance to keep it from rusting. A few minutes and some windex took care of that. As i read from one of the other reviews the handle is kind of annoying so i ground it down to fit my hand better. it has a ridge running all the way around in the middle of the handle about 1/4 inch tall so its not really comfortable. Once i ground it off it fit much better and was alot more comfortable. i believe it was meant so you could take a lower grip and get more leverage when chopping. I also drilled straight through the end of the handle to attach a lanyard. the sheath as alot of people have already said kind of sucks it does not hold the blade well at all. The belt loop was not even attached when i got it and it does not stay on the sheath so i had to improvise a new way to attach it. When the main knife and the two small knives are in the sheath it started to pull the pleather from the plastic so i had to shift the small blades to the side and super glue the pleather so they would not hit the handle of the main blade and force the pleather away from the plastic. For shipping purposes the edge has been ground off the main blade but after a bit of grinding i got a very decent edge and it holds it quite well. the two small blades had no edge at all they were more dull that butter knives or country music. but again getting them on the grinder for a bit and they were razor sharp. I purchased this knife so that when i am out in the woods i did not have to carry my KA-BAR and my hatchet. It easily does the job of both of them. the main blade weighs almost 2 pounds so do not mistake this for a machete its not. I gave this Kukri a 4/5 stars only reason it was not a 5 was the ridge in the handle and the poor quality of the sheath. If you dont mind doing a little work and a little improvisation buy this thing now its totally worth the 25 bucks they are asking for it.

The main blade is very nice for the most part. It is full tang with a piece of steel glued to the bottom of the handle to cover the end. The two little blades are neat and look cool in the sheath. The sheath itself looks okay but is very cheap. When all three blades are inserted the glue connecting the pleather to the plastic body of the sheath will not hold. The metal tip on my sheath was moved while it was still drying causing it to be messy and crooked. Luckily it popped off easily and could be super glued.
Assuming that this item is purchased more for the main blade than the sheath, it is a good purchase. Better deals can be found, but none eligible for Prime.

I've had mine for a few years, and it is a. Proud possession and constant tool around the house as well as out in the wilds,
It holds a decent edge, ,making it serviceable for heavier cutting work, while the angled shape allows for powerful chopping actions. For more detailed work, one of the smaller side side knives is another useful tool when the other bladr is too large to employ It's a machete, a hatchet, a hammer, aundcwhatever other your needs may require. The rib may need sanding or grinding for comfortable use, as the steel to wood match can be better Good weight, well balanced. |
