Great field taking book for recording data in inclement weather.
Tyler Orgon
In really really heavy prolonged rain the pages will deteriorate, and its best to use pencil not pen, unless you use a special write in the rain pen.

It came in the mail well before the expected date and was of excellent quality.

I purchased this notebook for an Ornithology class, and it was really useful. We had lab for 10 weeks, and each time we had to stand in cold, heavy rain for 3 hours watching birds and recording our observations. The notebook paper held up really well, but after about 2 hours, it did get a little soft. I used a pencil, and it smeared a little bit, but it was still readable, wet or dry.

Word to the wise though: when writing with a pencil, don't bother trying to erase, because the paper ends up covered in a smeary blob of graphite. Also, the spiral ring is not large enough to stick a pen or pencil into, so you will have to carry that somewhere else on your person. Unless you have rather large pockets, the notebook rarely fits into a coat or pant pocket, so you might have to hold it as well. This became pretty tricky when trying to look through binocs and hold a field guide and write in the notebook, because I had to hold everything all at once.

Overall: the notebook holds up well in heavy rain for about 2 hours at a time and dries well, and it's inexpensive. I definitely recommend buying it, or possibly one in a smaller size so it can more easily fit in a pocket.

I do a lot of field work for my research. We deal a lot with water/sediment/fish. This book has been out in the 100 degree weather to about 3 degrees Celsius walk in fridge. It has withstood waters of all quality, although i've never actually dropped it into the water and also has been covered with mud/sediment/sand. It might not look brand new but all the data is readable and therefore it has been a flawless product thus far.

I used this during my 135 mile backpack on the Appalachian Trail. It rained almost two thirds of the trip, sometimes for days on end. Everything I owned was wet and soggy but I could still journal every day without worrying about ruining the paper. It was awesome! Not too heavy, either. I was concerned that the spiral would get ruined because of all the rough treatment I threw its way, but it held its shape and the wires never pulled loose or got caught on anything. Inside, the lines were spaced just far enough apart, similar to a college ruled loose leaf. I liked the unobtrusive dotted vertical lines that allowed the journal to be used as graph paper if needed. I highly recommend this book for rugged outdoor use. I'm ordering another for my next trip.

Any Rite in the Rain product will perform with excellence. I use them for collecting Forestry field data, and have used them in the past for recording water sample data. You truly can write in a downpour. My personal preference in the smaller notebooks are the spiral bound options, simply for ease of using both sides of the sheet. The one drawback: pens do not work when the paper is wet, you must use a pencil.

RITE IN THE RAIN (a/k/a RITE-IN-THE-RAIN) all-weather outdoor notebooks are something of a marvel. I decided to do a short series (as much as Amazon will allow) since I highly approve of this product but usually get only one size notebook, the top-spiral-bound 3"x5" notebook. That one happens to have a name: Pocket Journal by Rite In The Rain which is as useless as it is silly.

But then the assortment here is so massive, I guess it isn't too bad an idea to nickname each size product. This particular 3"x5" notebook is most commonly used by all manner of law enforcement, reporters and scientists. I used to be law enforcement and have always been a scientist. However, you can get these in pretty much all sizes. Recently I saw a bird watcher (Owen Wilson to be exact) carrying one in the film The Big Year (see my review). Yet another good use for one of these, eh!

Essentially this is a notebook consisting of "frosted" pages (that means chemically treated) so they stand up to wet, inclement weather as long as you write with the required tools. A fine mechanical pencil, good ballpoint or the specialized and very expensive "Rite in the Rain" Weatherproof Tactical Clicker Pen - Black Ink (97) will do nicely.

This is an excellent field notebook, whatever your field may be.

We use this at my son's spot at the cemetery do people could write in it. It works wonderfully. We live in New England and it rains, snows, sun shines here and it faired pretty well. Would buy again.

This goes diving with me so I can take notes under water. Feels like regular paper on the surface and writes just a good underwater with a pencil.

After a long dive the paper will get saturated but it does not break apart, just dry it out and its good as new!

I purchased this for an avid hunter/fisher/sportsperson. He was very happy to receive what he considered a top quality all-weather notebook to keep up the family tradition of journaling in the wilderness.
