A mesmerizing look at the history of America's best sport,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rites of Autumn - The Story of College Football (DVD)
Since this ten-part documentary first aired on ESPN last fall, the only way to purchase it for home viewing had been to go directly through the production company. I did it that way, and the incovenience and delays were monumental. College football fans now able to purchase this amazing series more easily should celebrate.Narrated by Burt Reynolds (who, as an actor and a Florida State alumnus, is not my favorite person), "Rites of Autumn" reviews this history of college football from its earliest days to the present, focusing on individual elements of the sport. Reynolds's voice-over, to his credit, smoothly introduces the viewer to each subject and character, with an engaging objectivity an interest in each. From individual players to specific matches and long-time dynasties, the topics covered reflect the characters and events of the sport while investigating the social and even political influences exercised and experienced by America's first gridiron love--the college game. Using interviews and vintage footage, the story involves the viewer and conveys the historical scope and grandeur of the college football story in a way worthy of the game's great legacy. Fans of smaller programs will be glad to note that, while the series gives its greatest emphasis to the "biggest" schools, it also acknowledges the importance and influence of teams from lesser divisions. While it would be simple for any intimate fan of the game, let alone a fervent devotee of a specific school, to detect prominent persons and events left unaddressed, the ten, hour-long episodes encompass everything that might reasonably be included, without any glaring exclusions. If you cannot travel to the College Football Hall-of-Fame in South Bend, envelope yourself in the sites and sounds, the history and pagentry, of America's greatest sport through this collection. You'll not regret having a bridge over the long eight-month gap from the last College Gameday broadcast of the old season to the first broadcast of the next.

The footage, the stories, the themes -- every component of this DVD set is fantastic. I learned a lot about the history of U.S. college football. The price is phenomenal, too. I once saw the set selling for $99.95. If you like college football, go for it.

Rites of Autumn(History of Modern College Football),

This review is from: Rites of Autumn - The Story of College Football (DVD)
College Football is fast becoming America's newest pastime. There are always those who will argue baseball is better, but college football is always talked about from July through February with a childlike zeal. "Rites of Autumn" attempts to give a history of the coaches and players that shaped the sport into the NCAA and NFL we know today. The series is ten episodes narrated by Burt Reynolds and each one has themes similiar to a Ken Burns' documentary. The only holes in the show are the lack of information on teams other than Alabama, any Big Ten teams, Notre Dame, USC,Oklahoma, and Miami. There are many teams that really helped shape the sport that were totally looked over. Perhaps time did not permit, but this is a very entertaining view of sports history. Overall I would recommend anyone at least renting it or borrowing from a friend because if you love football...you will love "Rites of Autumn".

Great Tradition of College Football,

This five disk set is a terrific buy, especially if you have an interest in the tradition, history and rivalries of college football. Burt Reynolds narates and we see interviews with Mark Harmon, Tommy Lee Jones, Lynn Swan and others complementing the old and current movie clips. It was just a tad redundant but I just wished it was longer.

Great Value,

First, let me say that this is a great buy for the price. However, if you are a fan of midwest schools, they really don't give enough attention to these universities.I'm a Nebraska fan and they didn't even mention Osborne in the greatest coaches sections, and barely any of Bob Devaney who started it all. Texas is mentioned during the time of Darrel Royal and Oklahoma is discussed during Bud Wilkenson's tenure. Barry Switzer's tenure is pretty much completely left out. Its very centered with the eastern schools, USC and Notre Dame. If you love college football in general than it will be a great buy, but it is very unbalanced in its coverage.

A well-rounded DVD that goes into great detail about the history of college football. The footage that is included in the stories that are to hold rivets you to your seat. There is so much information on this DVD that even the diehard college football fan will find information they never knew existed. Narrated by Burt Reynolds this is an excellent history lesson.

Great idea, poor execution,
This review is from: Rites of Autumn - The Story of College Football (DVD)
I love the idea of a DVD set covering the history of college football. The topics were right on, impressive video. Unfortunately, the bias was obvious, especially toward Notre Dame. Certainly Notre Dame has played an important part in the history of college football, especially during the earlier days this set seemed to emphasize. But this production greatly over did it. I could give several examples, but I'll give just one. There was a chapter titled "Victory", presumably about big victories of some sort. Of the seven games/victories covered throughout the history of college football, three included Notre Dame. And one of those was a tie. If the writers had tried, I'm sure they could have come up with more appropriate games. On the other hand, I'm sure they knew exactly what they were doing; the purpose is to make money and nothing sells like Notre Dame. Bottom line, if you're a college football fan in the east or midwest, especially a fan of Notre Dame, or a fan of the earlier days, you'll love this set. Other than the bias, it was very well done. I wish someone would do the same thing, including the history of college football as played in the other parts of the country.

I have the book so I purchased the DVD set to go with it; I am very pleased with this addition to my collection. I only have 1 gripe about this, which is the reason why I didn't go with 5 stars, and that is as usual items such as these are only in Region 1 mode. Until such time as items such as this become available on multiple Regions I will have to continue to keep a Region 1 player available for DVDs I purchase from the US.
