5.0 out of 5 stars SATANIC BLACK METAL!, June 28, 2007
By
This review is from: Rites of the Black Mass (Audio CD)
This is THE album to start listening to real satanic black metal. 3 piece all the way here. Totally brutal and intense yet so catchy it's hard to describe, I used to listen to this on tape all the time. I wish they would reissue it to the younger generation of black metellars so they can see that not all black metal comes from Norway. The intros in between the songs set the evil eerie bleek tone of the album and the lyrics come out quite well as I can make out them with out the lyrics sheet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Infernal Tribute to the God of the Abyss and His Black Pope, August 4, 2008
By
This review is from: Rites of the Black Mass (Audio CD)
Eerie and atmospheric, interspersed with quotes from the works of Anton LaVey, and soul-crushingly intense all the way. It's like an unholy worship hour in your living room. And we all know how fun those can be.

For any fan of true Black Metal that pulls no punches, this band is among the best, and this album's sound definitely stands out.

But only the dedicated will be able to find a copy these days...

5.0 out of 5 stars Le Messe Noir..., January 14, 2008

Draconis Blackthorne (The Haunted Noctuary) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rites of the Black Mass (Audio CD)
Upon My searchings for an alternative to the accepted alternative these unimaginative days, I come across a marvelous Satanic band called ACHERON. Yes, they seem straight out of the murky stigeon depths alright, echoings from a Dantean watery abyss. Rites of the Black Mass starts off with a quote from Anton LaVey's THE SATANIC RITUALS, from Le Messe Noire, in a deep, resounding, haunting, demonic voice from beyond the thresh-hold of nightmares. Then, after the preliminary invocation, we are blasted off into a world of blasphemy & diabolic diatribes. Needless to say, the musick is skull-crushing, a veritable brain-blender of morbid velocity & grinding power-drives... sublime.

The lyricks were considered so offensive to certain censorship bodies, that fans have to send away for the lyrick sheet. But it sure is worth it when it arrives. I anxiously surveyed it with a rolling, red-veined eyeball, & a twisted gnarled finger, & was pleased at what I read. The whole album is based upon The Black Mass, obviously, according to The Black Pope.

A word of warning to those who would dare play these abominations - once you begin playing the musick, you best not stop until it is over. For dire consequences may follow the interruption of a Black Mass...

GET IT, OR ROT IN HEAVEN!

Review of Rites of The Black Mass re-release:

With impressive new album art, featuring The Prince of Darkness enthroned and accompanied by a couple of succubi and serpents in an appropriately Hellish environment, the re-release of Rites of The Black Mass is still complete with introductory orchestral narrations by Magus Gilmore, with songs featuring genuine litany from Dr. LaVey's The Satanic Rituals' cathartically theatrical Le Messe Noir, making this opus unique by itself, but for those who appreciate the Blackest of Metal musick straight from The Pit, this remains a barely comparable unleashing, casting an evocatively embracing shadow of formative daemonic evilution.

A CD booklet with lyrics is also included, which the previous circa XXXI A.S. did not include {one had to actually request it from The Order of The Evil Eye, due to the explicitly intense blasphemous lyrics, which was quite pioneering in the latter phase of The Satanic Panic}, threatening and seemingly succeeding in pulling the fetters of mythological heaven down, with some new band photos added as well; and quite pleasingly, I received an autographed copy from Mr. Crowley himself. Sound is excellent, if not even enhanced.

So even if you still possess the original CD, cassette, or vinyl, this one is definitely worth acquiring if just for the artistry for your salacious contemplation, and the fact that demos and pre-demos for ROTBM are graciously included herein. If you have never heard, and otherwise desired to experience this previously-hard to find musickal tribute to the Luciferian rebellious liberation of The Black Mass, now is your chance to sign the pact!

4.0 out of 5 stars Confusing? 5 diferent versions exist?, April 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rites Of The Black Mass (Audio CD)
I had wanted the 2007 remastered reissue on Dying Music with different (from original) cover art and

containing five bonus tracks. This would equal a total of 25 tracks. I already own the original 1992 Turbo Music version.

- All the other versions but the Dying Music reissue have the original Pentagram artwork.

Rites of the Black Mass (original 1992 Turbo Music version)

Rites of the Black Mass (JL America version 1992)

Rites of the Black Mass (Bootlegged 1998 version on Metal Age)

Rites of the Black Mass (2007 Dying Music Reissue)(Official remaster with 5 bonus tracks) (Different cover artwork)

Rites of the Black Mass (Bootlegged 2009 Metal Fighter Records version limited to 3000 copies)

CD re-released, remastered in 2007 by Dying Music with different cover art and

containing five bonus tracks.

bonus tracks:

21. Summoning the master (1990 Rites... demo)

22. The Enochian key (1990 Rites... demo)

23. Thou Art Lord (1990 Rites... demo)

24. Ave Satanas (1990 pre-demo 4-track)

25. To Thee We Confess (1990 pre-demo 4-track)

So the one being listed here (on Amazon) with the Pentagram cover is not the Dying Music version. That 20078 Dying Music version has 2 naked chicks on the left and right and a set of stairs at which at the top a "winged beast" sits.
