Book Description

January 1, 1999 1890157139 978-1890157135
From the author of "The Cult of Sango" comes the new book "Rites of Passage, Psychology of Female Power". Author, Iya Sangode examines and raises everyday female issues, while offering self-help techniques. Probably more important, Iya Sangode presents various potent "female psychologies" culled from the Yoruba culture of Nigeria and West Africa. Researching deeply the sacred odus (Yoruba religious scriptures), Sangode draws the readers to the esteemed role of women and their profound position in the community as well as in some of the most powerful and important Yoruba societies and cults.

5.0 out of 5 stars "This book is excellent! Long overdue, yet right on time!", March 3, 1999
This review is from: Rites of Passage: Psychology of Female Power : A Manual for Young African-American Women, Medicine Women, Priestesses and More Mature Women of spirit (Paperback)
"This book is Excellent! Long overdue, yet right on time! Considering approximately 87% of the blacks in America are of Yoruba descent. This book could only have been written by an American black woman like yourself who has the experience and knowledge of our culture, traditions and heritage. It is the first book that I have read of this type that is not patronizing black women. A must read for all African-American black women and men! Adupe Pupo! Chief Olugbala Songobunmi."

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book, February 15, 2007
This review is from: Rites of Passage: Psychology of Female Power : A Manual for Young African-American Women, Medicine Women, Priestesses and More Mature Women of spirit (Paperback)
I have this book for over a year now and had plenty of time to read and reread it and it keeps getting better. It has much valuable information for those interested in woman spiritual powers - and this kind of information is hard enough to find.

I enjoy reading mainly Part 4, about Gelede and the spiritual powers of the Great Mothers; this part alone stands for the whole book, it is enlightning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique and thought provoking, July 7, 2004
This review is from: Rites of Passage: Psychology of Female Power : A Manual for Young African-American Women, Medicine Women, Priestesses and More Mature Women of spirit (Paperback)
I had the opportunity to read this book and my wife read it shortly thereafter. It's an excellent discourse and I recommend that couples as well as women and girls alone read it.
