Very few solo recordings exist of the legendary Cuban percussionist Lazaro Plá, better known simply as Manteca; who rose to fame in the nightclubs of Havana in the 1940's and 50's. Manteca often became the high point of many a nightclub appearance - when he would emerge from the back of the bandstand to mesmerize the audience with his explosive conga playing. The rare early 1960's sessions presented here faithfully capturing Manteca leading a small but explosive Afro-Cuban combo, is an exemplary representation of the master percussionist. All selections newly remastered.

Lazaro Pla, known as "Mantaca" to all the Cubans, was one of the best bongoseros from Cuba. I had the pleasure to meet him in person back in 1977 in a night club, while attending a post class graduation celebration. His background goes back to the early days when he was the bongo player for the great Cuban pianist and composer Ernesto Lecuona and the Cuban Boys. This CD has a great variety of rhythms with Carlos (patato) Valdes on congas and Nelson (El Flaco) Pardon on timbales both great Cuban percussionists. + Lazaro Pla + (Manteca) R.I.P.
