4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and lovely... January 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
UK trio White Lies return with their sophomore album "Ritual", which is more of the dark angular synth Rock of their debut. If you liked the upbeat Dance/Rock of "Farewell To The Fairground" or swelling atmospheric ballad "Nothing To give", there's more here.

The upbeat "Is Love" opens the album on a spartan beat before full instruments kick in at about the one and a half minute mark. The frenetic rocker "Strangers" follows ("I've got a sense of urgency" sings lead singer Harry McVeigh in his ominous baritone). "Bigger Than Us" is a pulsing rocker, while the atmospheric "Peace & Quiet" brings down the tempo somewhat. The dark "Turn The Bells" is another ballad with shimmery synths.

Religious imagery creeps into lyrics on songs like the Depeche Mode-channeling "Holy Ghost", the ballad "The Power & The Glory", and my favourite song the mid paced "Bad Love" ("I've been going to Church but I don't believe, I'll ever be clear of this pain " - with crunchy guitars over a funereal beat). Closing is the synth ballad "Come Down" (with McVeigh channeling Brandon Flowers).

If you like Interpol or Editors, this should be right up your alley.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just ... really like it. January 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I had never heard of White Lies before right around the beginning of December of this past year. I was listening to a local college radio station and "Bigger Than Us" was playing. I had no clue who it was so I called the station and asked. When I looked them up and saw the album this song was from wasn't coming out for over a month, I knew I had to go back and listen to some of their past work.

Boy, am I glad I did.

I picked up "To Lose My Life ..." and was hooked after the first play through. It was dark, warm, melodic, and kept me fully interested from the first note to the last.

Needless to say, when "Ritual" was released I ran right out and got it. I was satisfied after the first listen and it seemed to only get better with each additional play through. My wife said, "They sound a little like The Killers".

I find it very refreshing to get a record like this in a time when 36 of the "Top 40" are rap/hip-hop/r&b/whatever-they-call-it. I'm glad I was listening to that station that day or I would have never discovered White Lies.

Listen to some samples and hear for yourselves. It's just good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album by one of my new favorite bands. January 21, 2011
By Marcus

White Lies are a small piece of 80's sounding heaven. I love the beat of all the songs. The album is upbeat but with melancholy words of yearning and loss. I think this album is on par with their first album. It is strange to me that this group isn't as big as Interpol or Arcade Fire it could be for lack of promotion in the United States. They are promoted more in the United Kingdom. Sadly they should be promoted more here as well. They are one of my favortie new bands and when it comes to new music or new artists I think most of it is so-so.
