The name of this stone comes from the Greek word onyx which means nail of a finger or claw. Legend says that one day while Venus was sleeping Eros/Cupid cut her fingernails and left the clippings scattered on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into stone which later became known as onyx. Onyx is the birthstone for the month of July and December. This mystical stone is the astrological stone for the sign Leo. The Lore of onyx has it that it is given as a gift on the seventh and the tenth wedding anniversaries. Some believe that the black onyx gemstone is a source of chakra for your spiritual being grounding you so that you have a higher sense of who you are and where you want to be in life. Black Onyx is a source of protection from evil spirits and to give you mental awareness and connection to higher spiritual beings.
