2.0 out of 5 stars Slicer review
This item is just o.k. It does slice the cheese, salami, etc., but not necessarily evenly. It also is difficult to hold the meat, cheese, or whatever and press the button and move it to slice all at the same time. It really works better if two people are doing the operation. It also takes some doing to take it apart and wash all the parts after use. I would...

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny for Saving Money, March 16, 2010

This little slicer replaced the Bosch slicer, which I own. They are basically identical except for the name.

I always like ultra-thin sliced meats and cheeses. Additionally, I bake my own bread. I purchased this slicer a few years ago because I never could master thin-slicing meats, no matter the knife used. Cheese slicing, the same. There were two attractions to this slicer: one, low price in case I didn't like it, and two, it folds to a very small dimension to fit in a drawer or cabinet.

Setting up the slicer is simplicity itself: the 'table' folds down from the front of the slicer, where it also protects innocent hands from the extremely sharp circular blade. The sliding attachment that guides the food fits into a slot, and you're ready. There is a recessed knob on top that adjusts the recess determining slice thickness. The power cord fits completely into a recess under the blade side, unwinds and plugs in with a 2-prong plug.

Operation of slicer can take a little practice, a little that some other reviewers haven't had the patience to do. Because one of these can easily take the tip of a finger off, the power button must be pressed to keep the blade rotating. Additionally, there is a smaller button on the edge that must be pressed along with the power button. Therefore, the other hand guides the food into the slicer. Again, a little practice will teach the user how to best feed the food into the blade. With proper adjustment, such items as roast and ham can be sliced to virtual transparency, cheese can also be thinly sliced quite easily, and with the proper adjustment, bread can be sliced to desired thickness. As the food is sliced, it falls out the back side, where a plate or paper towel can catch the food.

I would emphasize that this blade is razor-sharp. I have owned this slicer a few years and have cut mostly meat items with mine and it has shown no sign of dulling. The blade is held to the base with a simple turn-knob in the middle of the blade, allowing it to be easily removed for careful cleaning. All surfaces are white plastic, and not difficult to clean. Again, when I read some other reviews on this machine, I wonder whether they are still looking for a self-cleaning meat slicer! There is no such thing-

This slicer is extremely lightweight to match its compact size. Perhaps it would not be heavy enough for constant, daily use. Mine hasn't had that, though it has been used very regularly. Also due to its compact size, the blade is not sufficient in diameter to slice huge hams, etc. Buy a slicer that size and it certainly will not be as easily stored as this one.

I have had no problems whatsoever with this little slicer. It has done what I wanted to do, and it has done it well. If only all my purchases were as successful!

I have thoroughly enjoyed having this slicer. I make bread and other methods of slicing have not been completely satisfactory. I want thinner slices to reduce calories and make the loaves last longer. This slicer does the trick. You can't just run the slicer easily back and forth with bread, you have to manually return the bread to the starting position, but that's no big deal. Sometimes the bottom crust catches between the blade and the housing and you have to pull it out gently without breaking the bread - but that isn't a big problem either. This is just so much better than other things I have tried, and without spending hundreds of dollars (or more) on a professional slicer. Well worth the money, wouldn't want to be without it.

We bought this little slicer because so many meat departments no longer have a real butcher to cut meat the way we want it.

It does the job well... though you shouldn't expect it to work like a $500 machine.

Overall.. I quite satified, and would recomend it to anyone looking for a basic slicer.

So far, I love this machine.

Slicing cheddar cheese is a bad idea, though. It's gummy, and everything gets gunked up quickly, slowing the use of the sliding holder of the food way down. Buy the pre-sliced.

It works wonderfully on bread, which is the principal reason that I needed it. I wanted to slice my bread machine loaves thin and flat. This it does, perfectly. Now, I can use the slices in my sandwich grill.

I am quite happy with this purchase!

I bought this machine to slice meat for hotpot but it is really not possible to do so. The plastic body moves back and force, and when I push the meat through, it makes really thick pieces. Will buy another one that is made of steel.

I've had this slicer well over a year and used it at least once a week if not more. My main need was for slicing bread. I love the fact that it folds so takes up less storage space. I agree that it's a little shaky if you put too much pressure on the feed, that food does get caught in the little cracks, and that you have to be careful when taking it apart due to the plastic threads. But for the price and my needs I thought it was a deal.

Once I figured out the perfect slice thickness I made marks on the machine and the knob with a marker so all I had to do was line the marks up to get the right thickness every time.

One warning to bread makers: be sure to take the bread paddle out of the loaf before slicing. Sadly, I forgot and now I'm buying a new slicer.

Had it less than a month. Sliced 1 head of iceberg lettuce & 1 pound of Gouda before the nylon gears stripped. Too pathetically made to stand up even as a toy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Got it for free...and still not worth it!, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Rival 1042W Electric Food Slicer, White (Kitchen)
My grandma has had this slicer for some time (she rarely used it)and I've always wanted a slicer, so she gave it to me. I tried it for the first time last night and I'll be giving it away. Maybe I'm spoiled because I worked in a large deli years back, but this thing is so poorly designed it isn't even funny. It requires you to hold a button down to keep the blade going. You use your other hand to move the meat to slice it, but if the weight of the meat (or cheese) isn't sufficient to push it towards the blade (which it never is, considering the size of this slicer), then you really have to physically push the meat into the blade with the pusher. Problem...any amount of pushing pushes the whole machine away from you! I don't know if it originally came with suction cups or what, but you seriously need a third hand to operate this machine. Components are flimsy, design is bad, and it's a huge pain to clean. After slicing about a pound of meat on it last night I didn't even want to make the effort to clean it, I just wanted to get rid of it. Thankfully the husband cleaned it for me, and it's boxed up to be given away on Freecycle.
