Not so great...,

Below expectations. First problem: the blade wasn't well aligned with the food tray (not perfectly parallel, but slanted at the top) so it is hard to get those perfect "paper thin" slices. Second problem: cleanup takes some work. You need to remove the blade and clean behind it after use, or food will accumulate. It takes some practice before you get even slices. On the plus side the mechanism works well. Overall the slicer is resilient and well built. I found it better to do thick slices than thinner cuts...

Nice For The Price,

I've owned one of these slicers for several years & have gotten good service out of it until just recently. I don't believe I have overused the unit, but the carrier tray attachment has become harder to keep alligned. Most of all, the drive gear for the blade is nylon, instead of metal & no matter how I adjust it, I have had it ruin the teeth on several blades in the last year, which are not replaceable & require replacement of the entire blade unit by mail-order from the Rival Service Depot. Still, I find it is a decent buy in the low cost range for light duty use in the Susie Homemaker Kitchen. Just don't expect to carve those big Elk or Deer roasts in your freezer; this one's pretty much limited to the 2-4lb. range.

I've owned this slicer for several years now, being the only slicer I've owned I don't have a strong basis for comparison. The good- Slices way better and more consistantly than a knife. I've done bread, cheese, meat and fruit. The Bad- The motor seems to heat up and loose efficiency. I tend to flick it on, slice, flick it off, bring the meat back and then repeat. The nylon drive gears and not inspiring. Sometimes if you don't have the motor screwed in real tight it will back out and make a horrid noise. The unit seems kind of flimsy. The frame is good but the meat holding rack and guide can be deflected with pressure giving inconsistant results. Also after use removing the blade can be very difficult. They say use a quarter. Try a quarter with vice grips maybe. Even then you'll destroy a few quarters. I went out and got the thickest screwdriver I could find and use that. In short this unit works, its cheap and you get what you pay for. It worked well enough I suppose but I look forward to replacing it with something more robust in the future.

Rival Slicer,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rival 1101W Stainless Steel Electric Slicer (Kitchen)
The stop on this slicer isn't parallel to the blade. This makes cutting even thicknesses impossible. No adjustment is provided. The are 4 small nylon or plastic pads under the blade that act as bushings to support the blade. All of these fell off by the fifth time is used it. The can't be reattached. The unit is too light and consequently skids across the counter top when slicing. Save your money - use a butcher knife.

I guess the old saying that you get what you pay for is o so true. To me the money paid for this electric slicer was too much. I've only have own it for a week and have used it once so far but I'm thinking about sending it back. All I really wanted it to do was to cut nice thin slices out of a can ham. I put a chunk about the size of a pound on it noticing the food tray flexing at the top making it nearly impossible to get a straight thin slice out this thing no matter how I adjusted the thickness. I didn't overload it either by putting the whole ham on it. When you first turn on the motor it stars off slow and has to build up to speed (didn't like that) probably due to the plastic gearing on the blade. I use to short order cook and have had a lot of experience using a good slicer and this one isn't. And as another reviewer has mention here the plastic gear on the blade with not last. It would be ok for tomatoes and onions but not much more. Next time I'll spend the money get a heavy-duty slicer that will last.

Cheap, noisy, and uneven!,

I received this slicer as a Christmas gift. I use it primarily to slice meat (roast beef) and cheese. The slicer utilizes a gear driven motor which is extremely noisy... and I do mean noisy! It is very difficult to carry on a normal conversation with the slicer operating. The slicer is not precise and does not cut evenly. The flimsy carriage bends and wriggles which results in "wedge" shaped slices... thicker at the top, thinner at the bottom. I like my roast beef paper thin... almost translucent... and this slicer just doesn't cut it (pun intended). Redarding the flimsy carriage, if you press on it the wrong way, the whole thing pops off its track. If you're not careful you could end up with sliced fingers. All in all, I am very disappointed with this unit. I plan to sell it in my next yard sale and purchase something that's better built.

It Failed!!!!,

I used this slicer twice. Once to slice eye round roasts (4 of them) and once for cabbage. I found that the machine slipped around the counter too easily and the carriage was shaky. I was slicing on the thick side, and that came out okay. Yesterday, I took it out to slice a two-pound, flat cut cooked corned beef for reubens. I tried everything, and it wouldn't start. Not even a flicker. Dead. I re-read the user manual checked everything. This is not brain surgery and I am mechanically inclined. However, right now, I'm more inclined to recycle it ... just not sure which bin to put it in - tin or plastic.

I enjoy using your prduct. (The 101W Electric Steel slicer.) But I have sooooo much trouble finding the blades. Is there anyway you can stock them at the stores you sell this products?

I've owned this slicer for five months now. I've used it to slice packaged ham into deli meats, I've used it to slice several pork roasts for BBQ sandwiches, I've sliced a couple of Elk roasts, and I've sliced cheese. I love this slicer, as it is easy to use. The motor has to get up to speed first, but really, that's not an issue. The entire assembly comes apart for cleaning, and all you need to disassemble it completly is a phillips and flat tip screwdriver.I haven't had a bit of trouble, and use this slicer all of the time. I'm sure that there are better slicers out there, but for the hobbyist, this one does the trick. Inexpensive and dependable. |
