A complete and utter waste of money, the Rival BD275 double burner hot plate worked exactly half of one time.

I bought this because we were remodeling our home and we needed something to cook on in the temporary kitchen the contractor set up for us. Thinking a double burner hot plate would be a good and inexpensive solution for our "kitchen", I ordered this from Amazon who promptly delivered it a couple of days later. I plugged it in and waited and waited and waited for an interminable amount of time while the unit heated up. I couldn't tell if the unit was on because the light indicating power to the burner wasn't working, but I felt some heat rising from the element so, no big deal. Anyway, after about 15 minutes it got to a medium warm temperature, despite the fact that I had it set to high, and I started to cook my kids some eggs. I made it through two of the boys breakfasts when the unit shut down and wouldn't start up again.

The long and short of it: don't buy this piece of junk. It's not worth the bandwidth or even postage to send it back to Amazon for a refund. Rival should be ashamed of themselves for the lack of quality control in their products. Get a clue, Rival!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, June 9, 2007
This review is from: Rival BD275 Stainless Steel Double Burner Hot Plate (Kitchen)
I got this to set up a temporary kitchen while mine was under repair. The knobs broke off in pieces in about a month. I wasn't abusing it, or knocking it around, it was all I had and I had a nice safe spot for it. Once the knobs were off, it was unusable.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Star just because it is attractive., January 31, 2007

I got this baby home and plugged it in. The indicator light for the smaller burner did not light up. It was apparently broken out of the box. The temperature control knobs are almost as if they are on a child's cooktop. There is no definitive "click" for off, so I would be worried that it gets bumped "on".

But still I loved the look of it, so I tried to cook with it. It took 24 minutes to bring about 2.5 quarts of water to a boil, and this was in a highly conductive copper pot. Guess what? It's going back.

And an interesting side point, the Rival website doesn't list this as one of their products. My guess is that it was discontinued because it was engineered so poorly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very adequate double burner., March 8, 2007

I am an archaeologist who works out of the home most of the time and lives in hotels six months out of the year. To save money, I do a lot of cooking in my hotel room.

I picked up this rival electric double burner, and could not be more pleased with it. I've been using it since September of 2006 with no complaints. It is relatively inexpensive, has no open coil from which to start accidental fires, heats up quickly and reliably, and is like having a mini-kitchen in my home away from home.

Back home, it has come in handy during Thanksgiving and Christmas, as an extra two dishes can be cooked on it, or just used to keep things warm.

It is a sturdy unit as well, and has survived the rigors of being moved from hotel to hotel, jounced around a bit in the process, and taken out and put away every day.

My only complaint is the short cord, it is less than 1 foot long. I would give this five stars if it had a longer cord.

Still, all in all, the Rival Electric double burner is great.

1.0 out of 5 stars not recommended, September 27, 2007
This review is from: Rival BD275 Stainless Steel Double Burner Hot Plate (Kitchen)
I live in a studio apartment.I don't cook much. This product has a design mistake. The stainless steal body part of the burner gets hot and makes the knobs melt and fall apart. The knobs fell off in a month! It's not possible to fix them.. I don't recommend this product to anyone..I have to buy a new one in different brand..

I bought a Rival Buffet Range at a local Target on Dec. 30, 2006. Within three weeks, the knob for the right hand burner broke off while the unit was on, so that the only way to use that burner was to plug and unplug it. I have the receipt, but Target requires returns to be in new condition in the original box. So I wrote to Rival, saying I would like a refund. I definitely did not want a repair or a replacement. Their answer: "Hello,

I just received your e-mail, thank you for writing in. I do apologize that we will not be able to issue you any type of refund/credit since the product was not purchased directly from us, what we can do is send out a replacement if you agree. Thank you." How many people purchase consumer products directly from the manufacturer? What a ripoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact and Efficient, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Rival BD275 Stainless Steel Double Burner Hot Plate (Kitchen)
We bought the Stainles Steel double Burner Hot Plate because we were redoing the kitchen and knew that we would be without the stove for 6 weeks or so. It really did the trick. From cooking bacon and eggs to boiling water in a heavy sauce pan inorder to make mac & cheese for our granddaughter it worked great. It stores easily in it's box and fits nicely into a closet, ready for the next time it is needed. It's stainless steel surface allowed for easy cleaning. I was very happy with this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk, March 10, 2008

This review is from: Rival BD275 Stainless Steel Double Burner Hot Plate (Kitchen)
I purchased my Rival hot plate elsewhere but it is still junk no matter where it came from. Had it about 90 days when one of the control knobs came off the front; used small plyers on the wire just inside for control until the wire disapeared inside. The manufacture of this poorly engineered Rival product is a waste of resources and energy. DO NOT BUY.

I purchased this to have additional cooking surface for large gatherings but mainly to use in the pool/guest house since it has everything except for a stove. It works great as a warmer too.
