Not too bad, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Rival IS450-W Deluxe Ice Shaver (Kitchen)
Just got this today, it shaves the ice pretty well. My complaint is the cup that it spits the ice into. It's odd shaped, not really convenient for getting shaved ice out of. It's long and narrow, kinda like a skinny kidney pan, but about 8 inches deep. A bowl with a large opening or the ability to put your glass directly under it would have been nice. Overall, a good product.

Money Well Spent, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Rival IS450-W Deluxe Ice Shaver (Kitchen)
Even after reading the rather mixed reviews for this ice shaver, I decided to buy one. I'm not sorry.
I followed the directions, very easy directions, and cleaned the unit. Doing this not only helped make the ice taste better, it acquainted me with the machine and how it works.
The first time I used it, I put 10 - 12 ice cubes in the top, all fitting inside the ice chamber easily. I replaced the lid, according to the fitted tabs, and turning clock-wise, held on for dear life, not really necessary. It moved a bit, but not so much that I needed more than one hand to feel it wouldn't run away. It was also a bit louder than I first expected, but considering its function, I guess I can understand the noise. It's really not any louder than a mixer would be if you tried to use it for the same function.
It was harder to turn off than I expected. The reason for it is that while the centrifuge motion of the ice chamber is shaving and expelling ice to the external container, some pieces are flying around in the ice chamber and get lodged in the lid area.
The half moon shape of the catcher fits well onto the unit, but is a bit awkward for removing the ice. I used a long iced tea spoon, and with patience, was able to remove the ice without making a mess. On subsequent uses I've found that I can just hold a cup close to the machine's opening where the ice is expelled and it works just fine.
Once you've shaved the ice you want, any remaining ice will melt. Placing a paper towel or tea towel under the machine, after each use, will prevent puddles. I wouldn't use any towel during operation, as it will defeat the purpose of the rubber feet, and will be harder to control any extra movement.
I've been using it for about a month, and still feel it was money well spent. The two things I like best about the machine is that it uses regular ice cubes, no special tray taking up more space in my freezer; and that it's so easy to use. I have used it two to three times a week so far, and expect that as summer gets hotter I'll use it more. I'll let you know when I have to replace it, so we can all determine its durability.

Two years and going strong, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Rival IS450-W Deluxe Ice Shaver (Kitchen)
I bought this item about 2 years ago and it is still going strong. My kids use it very often (and all year round) and I expected it to die long time ago. I am very pleased with this item.
