Not too bad,

Just got this today, it shaves the ice pretty well. My complaint is the cup that it spits the ice into. It's odd shaped, not really convenient for getting shaved ice out of. It's long and narrow, kinda like a skinny kidney pan, but about 8 inches deep. A bowl with a large opening or the ability to put your glass directly under it would have been nice. Overall, a good product.

Money Well Spent,

This review is from: Rival IS450-W Deluxe Ice Shaver (Kitchen)
Even after reading the rather mixed reviews for this ice shaver, I decided to buy one. I'm not sorry.
I followed the directions, very easy directions, and cleaned the unit. Doing this not only helped make the ice taste better, it acquainted me with the machine and how it works. The first time I used it, I put 10 - 12 ice cubes in the top, all fitting inside the ice chamber easily. I replaced the lid, according to the fitted tabs, and turning clock-wise, held on for dear life, not really necessary. It moved a bit, but not so much that I needed more than one hand to feel it wouldn't run away. It was also a bit louder than I first expected, but considering its function, I guess I can understand the noise. It's really not any louder than a mixer would be if you tried to use it for the same function. It was harder to turn off than I expected. The reason for it is that while the centrifuge motion of the ice chamber is shaving and expelling ice to the external container, some pieces are flying around in the ice chamber and get lodged in the lid area. The half moon shape of the catcher fits well onto the unit, but is a bit awkward for removing the ice. I used a long iced tea spoon, and with patience, was able to remove the ice without making a mess. On subsequent uses I've found that I can just hold a cup close to the machine's opening where the ice is expelled and it works just fine. Once you've shaved the ice you want, any remaining ice will melt. Placing a paper towel or tea towel under the machine, after each use, will prevent puddles. I wouldn't use any towel during operation, as it will defeat the purpose of the rubber feet, and will be harder to control any extra movement. I've been using it for about a month, and still feel it was money well spent. The two things I like best about the machine is that it uses regular ice cubes, no special tray taking up more space in my freezer; and that it's so easy to use. I have used it two to three times a week so far, and expect that as summer gets hotter I'll use it more. I'll let you know when I have to replace it, so we can all determine its durability.

Two years and going strong,

I bought this item about 2 years ago and it is still going strong. My kids use it very often (and all year round) and I expected it to die long time ago. I am very pleased with this item.

I have used this almost every day since February and it is still going strong. The only down side is that if you have a large piece of ice, sometimes it will get logged and not shave correctly.

I have been using this machine for a couple weeks now. It works great and cleans up easy. Unlike another reviewer I found no inconvenience with the hopper-ice catcher. It is a litle narrow, but not so much that the shaved ice cannot be spooned out. If you don't want to spoon it out, just dump the shaved ice in a bowl and make some more. I highly recommend this machine and would definitely buy one again.Rival IS450-W Deluxe Ice Shaver with Bonus

Greatest shaver!,

This is the second Rival shaver I've owned. I purchased the first one about seven years ago and finally, between five family memebers and countless guests, I wore it out!! Truly the easiest and best shaver out there for the money. why waste your time on a shaver that requires you to use those pre-formed ice circles? And what happens if you forget to makemore?? Sheesh! The rival takes your basic ice cubes - your own or a store bought bag and makes it into fantastic shaved ice. This IS the product to purchase and own!

I have had my shaver since June and love it. I use it at least 3 times a day. I have been hooked on eating ice since January, so when I saw the ice shaver, I purchased it at Walmart. The first one broke after 3 weeks, I re-order a new one online from Circuit City in July and have been using it faithful everyday.

Great little snow cone machine,

We love our ice shaver. It shaves the ice just to the right texture for snow cones. The only thing I don't like is the shape of the container that holds the shaved ice is difficult to pour the ice out of and some of the shaved ice doesn't make it into the container but stays in the top area. But it's not enough reason not to buy it. We really enjoy ours.

Appliance worked well for one summer's worth of snow cones...,
This review is from: Rival IS450-W Deluxe Ice Shaver (Kitchen)
...but poor performance, as in nearly unusable, this year. Ice cubes no longer make adequate contact with blade without stopping the motor several times to give unit a shake.
The ice shaving's discharge chute and collection cup are poorly designed. Shavings must be plunged continually into cup as the unit runs; otherwise, the shavings clog the chute. Replacement blade is unavailable from Rival and after-market, third-party suppliers. Who needs another throw-away appliance? Cost: $15 on clearance @ WallyWhirld. IMO, not worth a penny more, considering its poor performance. |
