Don't waste your money,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rival MT660 Microwave/Toaster Oven Combination (Kitchen)
Terrible! Weighs a ton - takes 6 mintutes to toast; can't do basic microwaving. You have to change out the racks between microwaving and toasting - too much of a hassle and crumbs everwhere. We re-packed this for return almost immediately!

Is this an oven or a water pitcher?,

The switchover from microwave to toaster oven and back is not toooo time consuming, but it is a bit bothersome.
The condensation from microwaving is a huge pain. Water literally runs down the interior walls and door, and drips out when opened. If the door is not left open for hours to air-dry the interior, the water will still be there the next day. An email to Rival got this response: "I have just received your email and I would like to thank you for writing. I am sorry to hear of your disappointment with our product. The condensation build up on the door is normal. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you." Conveniently blew me off and ignored my description of water running down the sides and out the door. A local retail giant has been selling these things as low as $38 to get rid of them.

I bought this on sale at our local superstore, thinking it would be a great all-in-one replacement for our microwave and toaster oven. I was wrong.
Six minutes to make toast? That's totally unacceptable. Not only that, it dried out the bread before it toasted it. The interior is small, if you can deal with that. I can't. The microwave is underpowered. It takes too long to heat food. After any kind of cooking, the condensation buildup is tremendous. The unit runs a fan to vent the interior after it's done cooking, but that isn't enough. The moisture will stay on the inside of the unit for hours after cooking, if you don't leave the door open. No thanks. I suppose I could have gotten used to using the switches to change modes, but having the re-tool the unit's interior furnishings each time I changed cooking modes was too much. My unit had a defective lower heating coil, so all things considered, back to the store it went. I used the store credit to buy a new, nicer toaster oven, and I put my (not so) old microwave back on the counter.

Rival combo oven,
By Susiekc (Lyme, CT United States) - See all my reviews

I have had this oven for under a year. It now no longer works-it appers to have a loose wire as it loses power in any cycle or when at rest, and cannot be restarted. The wire rack is flimsy and when removing tends to fall out towards you and also falls through the back. With hot food this is DANGEROUS! I semi solved this problem by gluing pieces of magnet squares above the rack holder, so the rack couldn't tip. The broiler works pretty well. I had a GE combo oven for years (it finally died after about 20 years) and Rival was the only combo oven I have been able to find to replacement it. I have just called Rival and they are replacing the oven-that's pretty good!.

I love this product!,

This product is great! Don't let the other man's review discourage you from buying it! I don't know if it is heavy as I wasn't the one to take it out of the box and set it on the kitchen counter, but that doesn't matter after you set it where you want it anyways. You get used to switching the elements between microwave and toasting modes, and the fact that it takes 6 minutes and 15 seconds for toast. You have to compromise something in order to save space with this amazing 2-in-1 space saving appliance and that is it. The cooking time is affected by the intital oven temperature. If you were to toast several items the subsequent items wouldn't take as long to cook. As long as you don't accidently cook in one mode with the parts from the other mode inside you'll be find. It is easy to use, and the user interface has nearly perfect natural mappings. I have never had a problem with microwaving anything, as the other reviewer said. I highly recommend this product! :) I hope to have one of my own when I move into an apartment in a year and a half from now.

Terrible rusting problem,
This review is from: Rival MT660 Microwave/Toaster Oven Combination (Kitchen)
The concept here is very good however the execution by Rival is awful. The condensation that drips all over the inside and then on the counter when you open the door, is just terrible. In less than a year the whole inside has rusted out. We try to dry it after use but you can never get all of it, thus the rusting problem is chronic. I was looking for another brand and saw that there is a Sharp product with the same features that I might try but the microwave wattage is only 650. The Rival is bad enough at 700 but I can't bring myself to buy another one of their products after the performance of this one.

Great for dorm rooms! Not so much for homes.... Very LOUD!,

I haven't had a problem with rusting with my microwave, BUT, I haven't used it much, and I can definitely see how it could happen b/c there is a lot of condensation inside after you cook something.
There are a couple things about this mike that are incredibly ANNOYING. First and foremost, the beep it makes when its done is damn near ear piercing! I don't know why it is so loud. I always had to watch the mike and stop it early so I wouldn't wake up my roommate! Not very convenient. Also, there is a fan that runs for a few min after it's done cooking, and I just find that annoying as well. Also, toast takes over 6 minutes! Ok if you're in a dorm, where they don't allow toasters... but I'm at home, so the toaster obviously wins out on that one. With all that said, I gave it 3 stars for the sole fact that this is awesome for a dorm room. As you college students/parents should know, toaster ovens are NOT allowed in the dorms. This nice little unit takes care of that though, because no one can tell that it has a toaster oven in it.. it just looks like an ordinary microwave :) My suite-mates and I had fun times baking cookies (its small.. you can't do a whole batch) and broiling french fries so they would recrispify. [Yes, I made my own word.] So, overall.. Great for a dorm (if you can deal with the beeping), but no good for home. Even if you have a studio/small apt, I would suggest you sacrifice the space for a couple items that work more quickly and easily. |
