"festive imprints" really are fun, April 11, 2007
When you make quesadillas in the oven, all you end up with is dried out torillas. This quesadilla maker makes great soft-but-crispy quesadillas. The description glosses over this, and the picture doesn't display it at all, but I think the best feature of this product is that each quesadilla slice comes out with a different image imprinted on it (cactus, sombrero, maracas, sun, spanish guitar, and I've forgotten the last one). Also the plate design has many little ridges at the edge, which I believe seals the quesadilla more thoroughly than other models on the market, and it provides a great crispy texture there.
The lid does latch tightly, specifically so that it can make the imprints on the slices. So if you like humongous, thick quesadillas, this may not be the model for you -- though I don't know if any of the other at-home quesadilla makers accommodate that either. You can always just not latch the lid if your toppings are too thick.
Also, you do need to be careful about using too much cheese, because it does expand while melting. Once you learn the optimal amount to use, you'll be fine. I took one star off for the fact that you have to go through this trial-and-error process the first few times. I do think the quesadillas taste better now (with less cheese in them), so maybe it's just Rival forcing us all to eat better/make our quesadillas properly. However, I've never had cheese overflow the built-in overflow trough around the outside -- if cheese gets inside your unit, you're using way too much!
I highly recommend this product for people who make cheese-only or other simple quesadillas, and want a nice crispy texture. Impress your party guests by serving them quesadillas with festive mexican imprints!

Clean up is difficult and time consuming, March 28, 2007
This will produce a quesadilla with just the right crispiness and is very easy to operate and inexpensive, however the clean-up is a pain due to the metal plates having so many grooves and raised surfaces. Additionally, the quesadillas it produces are quite thin with little filling. It is not possible to make a thick, heartily filled quesadilla. If one tries melted cheese will run out and spill on the counter top. Worse yet the melted cheese and grease will go in between the bottom metal plate and the plastic housing with no way to get it out except when it is stored on end (one of the advertised features) upon which the cheese and grease will then run out and onto the shelf or cabinet it is stored in.
