A friend bought one at Walmart. It must have been the only one in existance!!! The ribs he has done in it are better than at ANY eating establishment!!! Why can't we buy one? I would like one and he wants another for this northern home.

This is an easy way to get that great smoke flavor! Otherwise, we have to drag out our barrel wood smoker and spend hours and hours hovering over it and adding wood and checking the temp. Just dress your meat, add wood chips and liquid smoke, turn it on and walk away. In bad weather, we put the Rival in the laundry room, turn on a table top fan, open the window to let the smoke escape, and set a timer. The smoke that actually comes out is minimal, but we don't want it in the house. I should add that our laundry room is a completely separate room stuck on the side of our patio. Also, no turning of the meat. If we are using a baste, then we will open the Rival from time to time. Normally, we don't baste-just rub the meat and leave it alone. Get one-you will love it!

It's a shame Rival discontinued this product because it's pretty useful. You won't get rib-shack quality barbecue out of this unit, but it is handy for adding a light smoke flavor to slow-roasted meats. What you have essentially is a roaster oven with a special chamber in the bottom for adding wood chips and another tray for water. Food cooks with a mixture of smoke and steam. Follow the included directions and the process is simple. Set it and forget it. It lacks the charm and mystique of a wood fired BBQ pit, but it's also pretty much fool proof, and great for those occasions when you don't have time to tend a live fire. You also have the option of leaving out the wood chips and using it as a traditional roaster oven. Probably the best way to roast a turkey, as the water chamber adds moisture while cooking, resulting in a moist, juicy bird.

We got ours on closeout a Wal-Mart for about 25% of the MSRP. I don't know if I would pay full price for one, but for the price I paid I'm more than happy with the performance.

Note: Oster makes a similar item, model #CKSTROSMK18.

brings new meaning to "set it and forget it" Real smoke flavor simply place your favorite wood chips inside the bottom of the roaster, put in the tray and rack, turn the smoking feature on and set the temp. Two controls one for smoking and one for cooking temperature. My ribs turn out just as good as any BBQ joint ive been too. You can also use it as a regular roaster.
