5.0 out of 5 stars Rival S12P Electric Skillet
I was looking for something like this when I recently moved into an apartment with a friend . I figured if I had mini-fridge , microwave, and some kind of electric or gas skillet I would be self-contained cooking-wise in my room .

I was looking for something like this when I recently moved into an apartment with a friend . I figured if I had mini-fridge , microwave, and some kind of electric or gas skillet I would be self-contained cooking-wise in my room .
Well I went to my local Target and looked at several models until I spotted the Rival S16 . It was ... which seemed at the time very reasonable, so I got one .
I have been using it for several weeks now and I am blown away by the performance and versatility of this skillet . The shape and design of the pan is very well thought out . It is big enough to cook just about anything and it has perfectly slanted edges so that rice or pasta that is simmering cant sneak up the sides and get stuck . Seems to me like a fairly thick , quality , non-stick coating as well . The speed with which this skillet reaches a usable heat is amazing . It's at least 3 times faster than a pan on a conventional stove , gas or electric.
You can fry hamburgers or steaks , grill oil-free chicken or fish , boil water for mac & cheese (cheese & mac?), simmer pasta or rice mixes , make grilled cheese sandwiches , its endless .
The only negative thing I can say about this product is that the vented plastic lid gets hot enough to emit a plastic odor the first several times you use it. I could sense a slight plastic taste after using the lid on particularly high heat dishes . This goes away after 4-5 uses but I wonder if you put it in the dishwasher, if it would temper the plastic and prevent this ?
All in all a great electric skillet , and I highly recommend it. That ... "reasonable" price has developed into a steal .

4.0 out of 5 stars A good kitchen tool, April 30, 2002
This review is from: Rival S12P 12-Inch Electric Skillet (Kitchen)
I have used this skillet more than any other kitchen gadget I own - including the toaster! It's perfect for all kinds of stir frys, pork chops, chicken, burgers - pancakes too! The only thing I would change about it would be to make the outside cool to the touch - I've burned myself twice so far by accidentally bumping into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, I'm Impressed!, December 27, 2004
This review is from: Rival S12P 12-Inch Electric Skillet (Kitchen)
The other day, my wife informed me that she had purchased some steaks and wanted me to cook them - four Filet Mignons and a T-Bone to be exact. I decided to use the electric skillet (Rival S12X12P) and I couldn't believe how well it worked. This skillet cooks evenly and is easy to work with. My only complaint is the control knob actually became a little hot. Other than that, this SKILLET kicks [...]! Buy one. You won't be sorry.

I find that most Rival products perform quite well.

We enjoy the flexibility of an electric skillet, especially during the hot summer months. Over the years we have used many brands. We purchased the Rival in the fall of 2003 and we used it frequently.

This is an excellent product, especially at this price. It is one of the few electric skillets we've owned that provides an even heat across the pan. The "simmer" actually simmers.

However, I do feel a safety precaution should be noted. Sadly, last night as I picked up the Rival by its handles, the one-piece handle/leg broke. Luckily, the skillet was not in use.

5.0 out of 5 stars At home on the range!, June 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Rival S12P 12-Inch Electric Skillet (Kitchen)
My husband and I fell in love with the 1935 gas stove in our home that we purchased last year. When we found out how much work it took to refurbish the stove, however, we realized we would have to rely on other appliances in the kitchen during the time it took to bring the stove back to life. This electric skillet far surpassed our expectations! It's great for everything from pancakes and omelettes to stews and stirfry. I even use it to "grill" fish, steaks and chicken -- the nonstick surface makes it easy and the lid keeps the spatters in.

The temperature range is excellent, from fryig chicken to use as a warming tray on a buffet table. Another plus: with actual temperature degrees shown on the heating element, once you know the right temp for certain dishes, they become foolproof. And, unlike the old electric skillets, you can dunk this one completely under water to wash it.

Even with a fully refurbished gas range, I reach for this skillet for most of my food preparation. I've even given it to several couples as wedding presents!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Electric Skillet on the Market!, April 25, 2006
This review is from: Rival S12P 12-Inch Electric Skillet (Kitchen)
My old electric skillet was finally put to rest this past week. Now I needed a new electric skillet. I wanted one which had a Dupont nonstick coating, would not wiggle or move across the counter when I stirred its contents, and it would be nice to see how the food was progressing without having to remove the cover. I typed electric skillet into the heading on Amazon and Viola! I found the electric skillet of my dreams! The skillet is deep, you can fit a whole chicken in it! Cleanup is a breeze with the Dupont teflon coating. The window in the lid is nice, now I don't have to lift the lid to check on the meal I am preparing. One of the best features is the rubber grip handles/feet, no sliding around on the counter when you are stirring the contents of the skillet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Skillet Cooking a Breeze!, January 31, 2002

The Rival Electric Skillet combines great cooking with tabletop convenience. The vent allows you to adjust the moisture loss. The window assists in keeping an eye on how hard the food is cooking. Clean-up is easy since the skillet is able to be put in the water and the surface is teflon. Foods can be made ahead of time and keep them warm without worrying about the stove being on, or the temperature being too hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR CABIN LIVING, August 31, 2005
This review is from: Rival S12P 12-Inch Electric Skillet (Kitchen)
This is the greatest electric frying pan I have owned. The new teflon update is far superior to earlier versions and doesn't scratch off (yet). It is easy to clean and heats quickly. I am very pleased with this utensil. I have given up completely on all rice cookers--they all stop working, but this can be used for stews, meats and rice and it all cooks perfectly. Years back, this same item lost the teflon rather easily, but now they've improved the surface and it has longevity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Skillet I've ever used!, July 3, 2004

This is an excellent electric skillet. You can cook all kinds of food, and clean up takes a minute. You can make perfect pancakes, omelettes, hamburgers, steak, anything you desire. You can put the pan in water, and for the price, you can't beat it. I was so surprised at the quality of this skillet. It is very well constructed, and actually has weight to it, not flimsy at all. I can tell you, these are going to make GREAT Xmas gifts! Highly recommend!
