Hot plate,

The hot plate works well. I use it in my smoker and I like the variable heat control. The element does not sit flat without some weight on it. That is the only small bad part. Over all a very good unit.

I wish that I had opted for the 1000-watt Proctor-Silex Fifth Burner that cost the same amount as this 750-watt powerless piece of junk. I bought it specifically to boil water with, and it heats the water to within 10 degrees of boiling and then cycles off. I watched and waited for 90 minutes with my thermometer and 3 quarts of water to see if it would ever boil, and it never did. I tried it with a much smaller quantity of water (24 ounces), and it would only simmer intermittently. Soggy, ruined noodles every time. Useless for me, may be good if all you want it for is melting butter.

Electric Smoking vs. Charcoal,

I use various woods when smoking meats or fish in my smokers and when buildingor creating a back yard smoker, this is the unit as you can control the heat temperature for the woods you use rather than using coal, It is the answer to charcoal getting into the taste over shadowing the flavor. The unit is sturdy and well built . Also good to have a few for party use, taking up little space and doing the job of keeping your items warm or hot depending on the setting. The price is also good compared to the competition.
