1.0 out of 5 stars Gets TOO hot and dries the food out!, October 23, 2009
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
I bought the Rival SCVP609H 6 Quart Crock at Bed, Bath & Beyond in September 2009. I have tried twice to use the cooker on low and returned home from work to find our food "Dried out" and ruined. The outside of the unit gets extremely hot as well. The third time we used it we decided to use it on warm. Still found the food boiling inside when we returned. We took it back to BB&B and they cheerfully returned it and we selected another brand. I was not going to risk having the same thing happen again! I am convinced the heating element is defective in this particular model. If you decide to buy it anyway, stay home so you can watch it. Make sure you move everything away from the unit!

1.0 out of 5 stars 3rd replacement and im done, August 20, 2009
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
This is about the same model to the various models Ive had, that connects the lid to the cooker. Dont think I will purchase another rival - my 3rd replacement has broken again. First 2 times the plastic piece that connects the lid to the unit broke and this 3rd one, the crock actually has cracked! I have never had a crock crack before! Not again will I purchase a Rival slow cooker!

1.0 out of 5 stars Too hot like other Rival cookers, February 19, 2009

I bought this due to the high rating by Consumers' Reports but as I read in ratings here for other Rival slow cookers, this cooks way too hot. I can only use it on weekends as everything is cooked in half the time on low. It was a waste of money and I can do better in the oven or on the stovetop. The hinged top is practical but must be removed before you can take out the pot.

1.0 out of 5 stars BOO!, March 6, 2010

My review is going to echo everybody elses, but I thought it was still important because of the lack of safety. The outside of the crock pot gets very hot, even when it is filled halfway like the instructions state. Also, the hinged lid broke a few months after we bought it, the screw ended up in our food. I am just glad I spotted it before giving to my son, it could have become a choking hazard! I don't recommend this model and if I could have given it a lower rating I would have.

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk, December 15, 2009
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
I got this crock pot for Christmas last year and I used it the first time on St. Patricks Day for my Guiness Corned Beef that cooks about 8 hours on high. I came home from work and lifted the lid to check on it and ALL THE PLASTIC ON THE LID BROKE OFF AT THE SAME TIME. The handles all melted off on the first use. I called Rival and had to jump thru hoops for a new lid and then they sent the wrong one. I only use this slow cooker for random things and will be trashing it soon. Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Temp is too hot on low setting and the front handle breaks., October 22, 2009
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
We bought the Rival after the crock in our Farberware cooker cracked and we couldn't find a replacement crock. The Rival cooks way too hot on the low setting, potatoes that touch the side will scorch. Also, the plastic front handle for lifting the lid broke and the screw holding the handle fell into the stew I was cooking. Fortunately, I had just started making the stew so the screw was easily located and I didn't have to discard the food. If I had known about the cheap/weak plastic handle I wouldn't have purchased the Rival. We've owned this product for about one year.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gives the word "junk" a bad name!!, July 29, 2010
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
A slow cooker that doesn't cook slow!! I guess I missed something. Must admit that I am partially the blame. I didn't attempt to use until after the warranty expired. WOW, I'm smart!! That's on me. I called customer service, what a joke!! Was told that the temperature settings were changed and users would have to get used to the idea that it cooks faster. I did pose the question as to why wasn't the name changed to "fast cooker" and the recipes rewritten to correspond with the new heat settings, naturally, couldn't/wouldn't answer. Can only comment that I must be gullible and incapable of formulating a rational thought cause that dog don't hunt. They must think I'm ignorant, stupid or both. My conclusion is that they just don't care. They made their money peddling subpar junk and will make more cause there are other gullible individuals just waiting to be taken advantage of. I can only hope they're a bit smarter than I am and use the darn thing so they can atleast take it back after discovering they acutally bought a "fast cooker". Afer a brief bout with elevated blood pressure, veins popping out my forehead and heart pounding like a jack hammer, it dawned on me I was the only one upset and at risk for a cardiac. Most if not all situations come to a critical decision point and sometimes you just have to cut your losses and let it go. I'm not pleased about what happened but I'm no longer angry. My vitals are normal and hopefully my comments will save someone a few dollars in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars SO-SO!, April 19, 2010
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
I have not had any problem with cooking anything in this crockpot and have had no problems with burning anything. The sides do get warmer than other crockpots I am used to. My BIGGEST problem is with the cheap plastic on the lid! My front handle broke and parts fell in the food the third time I used it and now after about 15 uses, the back hinge fell to pieces also into the food! I was going to purchase a replacement lid, but with the cost plus shipping, I could almost buy another brand of crockpot! And also it sounds like from the other reviewers that the new lid will break also! VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars No cooking time options!, January 14, 2010
By
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
I bought this crockpot desparately needing a way to cook dinner and have it on the table within 30 mintutes of my getting home from work.

I have tried several recipes and while they were all edible, they were also somewhat dry, and sometimes burned. Part of the problem is the size. In order to fill it halfway, I need to cook enough food for 5 people instead of the 2 we have in our house! The other problem is the timing options! Only 2 time options for both the low and high settings. So... what exactly do you choose when a recipe says to cook it on low for 4 hours (and your only options are 6 and 8)???!!!

I think it is a decent slow cooker, it overcooks food because you don't have options to cook it for less time and because since it is so big, if you want to cook food for 2 people, it won't fill the pot enough.

***I am editing this review after purchasing a smaller (3.5 qt) crockpot. Most of the issues I mentioned above were due to the size of the slow cooker. I was cooking for 2 people in a crockpot meant to cook for 5-6 people. However, that being said, you stil only have 2 heat setting choices, and 2 time setting choices per heat setting. My new 3.5 qt crockpot lets ME decide how long to cook it for... and had 3 heat settings: high, low and simmer... MUCH more user friendly.***

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a slow cooker!, January 13, 2010
This review is from: Rival SCVP609H-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
Bought this to replace an old one and needed the timer feature. Loved the idea of the lid on a hinge so you don't have to find a place to put the hot lid. Used it three times with my favorite recipes that I have successfully used many, many, times. All three meals were RUINED. If it was a meal with a lot of liquid, the liquid was boiling on low! A drier meal such as pasta is burnt to the sides in about 1 1/2 hours. Hardly a slow cooker. Cooks way too fast and way too hot!!!

Called the company to complain. They did note that they were getting complaints about this particular model and service rep said that they were making crockpots cook at higher temps now. (Just because technology has to be faster every day, doesn't mean that cooking meals in a SLOW cooker does!!) Anyway - they sent me a new one - a slightly smaller, different model free of charge. Bummed it doesn't have the hinged lid. I'll try it - cross your fingers that it works!!
