I liked the author's other three books but this one was hard to stomach, I only made it halfway through. The author's energy and talent would have been much better spent creating an interesting story in and of itself rather that making political statements, and or a schmaltzy attempt at creating some sort of peace outreach. The author in her introduction refers to the 2004 Madrid bombings (by Islamic extremists). She then points out that: "History has never been so important in understanding the present." What exactly is she implying? I doubt a better understanding of history would have prevented these bombings. Terrorists are not exactly rational and compromising that's why they are also called extremists.

Furthermore, the Arab Golden Age in Spain about which the author attempts to educate the reader is not without controversy. A Google search turned up numerous allegations of historical revisionism.

The story opens in Southern Spain in 1212 on the eve of war between Christians and Muslims. Pedro, a high ranking Knight Templar, allows his 16 year old stowaway niece, Clara, to go out and explore a strange city all by herself. This would have been inconceivable for said time and place. I had trouble suspending disbelief. The only way I could see a lone girl having some degree of safety and access is if she disguised herself as a man. The author could have borrowed themes from Yentl, Mulan, or The Butterfly Lovers. Clara could have been fleeing an arranged marriage, going off to war, or wanting to study Islamic medicine. In other words, the "understanding" that the author is trying for could have come through more believable, less obtrusive, means. I would also like to have been spared the Harlequin romance aspect.
