The last great Running Wild album,
By Metal Warrior (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rivalry (Audio CD)
This album is a great piece of work.... starts off with a cool instrumental, and then proceeds to the title track which has a nice chorus but is kinda recycled from their song Metalhead. The album has got some memorable epics namely Ballad of William Kidd, Return of the Dragon, Fire & Thunder, and War & Peace. some other highlights are the title song, Poison, Man on the Moon which has got a very nice riff. Sad that this band went downhill fast after this release. This one is my favorite Running Wild album along with Death or Glory, and Black Hand Inn.

Melodic pirate, I mean power, metal,

This review is from: The Rivalry (Audio CD)
Released in 1998, The Rivalry was the 10th studio from metal's original swashbucklers Running Wild. At this point in their career, the German band had settled into something of a formula (that formula is roughly Judas Priest + Captain Morgan's), so The Rivalry wasn't much different than the band's previous releases.
Formulaic or not, The Rivalry is a very fun album, and has all of the Running Wild trademarks - pirate themes, galloping leads, catchy melodies, marching rhythms, shout-along choruses and of course Rolf Kasparak's unique vocals. There are a couple of 8-minute epics ("Ballad of William Kidd" and "War and Peace"), but most of the songs are 4-5 minute, fast-paced, up-tempo melodic power metal numbers. What's not to love? The Rivalry is another very solid, very enjoyable melodic power metal album from Running Wild, and one that ought to please most fans of bands like Grave Digger, Pretty Maids, Sabaton and the like. Edition Notes: The Rivalry is also available with the band's Victory and Brotherhood albums - all three in digipacks - in the Legendary Tales box set.

The Pirate's ship has got a hole,

It's just a poor remake of "Masquerade" (the previous one). All the same ideas, but worse. The remarkable instrumental skills are still there, but... no spark!
