Editorial Reviews

Review

"Menard's book represents a worthwhile addition to the study of urban bossism because it deals with a smaller city."--Robert S. LaForte, Choice
(Choice)

“This is a story of the growing-up of Omaha. . . . The whole story here is an extremely well-documented narrative.”—Francis Moul, Omaha World-Herald

(Francis Moul Omaha World-Herald)

“[Menard] has captured the essence of Dennison and how he operated. . . . Menard’s fine and provocative book raises interesting questions about not only the goals but the nature and methods of operation of political bosses with a western background.”—Larry H. Larsen, Nebraska History
(Larry H. Larsen Nebraska History)

"A thoroughly researched and well-written account."--Paulo E. Coletta, retired, United States Naval Academy
(Paulo E. Coletta)

“A fascinating story of politics in the early part of the twentieth century. . . . A significant contribution to scholarship.”—Donald J. Senese, director, National Center for Presidential Research

(Dr. Donald J. Senese)

"[River City Empire] is a meticulously researched book. . . . Urban historians and political scientists should find much value in both the factual materials Menard presents and in his interpretations of them. Certainly residents of Omaha and those with ties there will find the study fascinating."--Frederick M. Spletstoser, Great Plains Quarterly
(Great Plains Quarterly)

I found Orville Menard's 1989 release of "Political Bossism" many years back at our main library. I checked it out several times because it was such a throughall insight of living in Omaha at the beginning of of the 20th Century. I kept wishing that Mr. Menard would re-release the book ever since I set sight of it. I periodically would hunt at antique bookstores for it. It was selling at various websites for $65 or more.
I recently found that a copy was available of all places a local library. Upon returning from a holiday vacation, I prepared to purchase it. In the week prior, I had ordered this book. The day before I was to purchase the 1989 version, I found this book in my mailbox.
I was shocked to discover that this is the reprint I so patiently desired. I then cancelled plans to buy the antique copy. Sadly, I went to my room and noticed while catching up with what I missed in the Omaha World Herald, Mr. Menard's obituary. He had passed 3 days prior to my recieving this book in the mail.
I will enjoy rereading this treasure trove of informative and massive investigation on Mr. Menard's part into Omaha life between 1900 thru 1932!!

This is an wonderful piece of work, it has fundamentally changed how I look at my city, my local government, and provides me with a new means of exploring the roaring 20's and the barbaric crime associated with prohibition. This is an inspiring tale of how a handful heroic citizens, brave journalists, and dedicated city commissioners removed from power, after more than a three decade reign, one of the most powerful urban tyrants in America.

Very wordy. About 10% read, at this date. I am sure it will get better. The town I live in was founded by the Creightons, of Omaha, and I see they are referenced in the book.
