Book Description

January 2, 2001
Nothing in Brazil is as it first seems, convent-bred Margaret Clairborne is warned when she arrives in Rio, a city named for a non-existent river. One of many who fled the defeated South to Brazil after the Civil War, Margaret is a brilliant pianist, but an innocent about a distant land that has its own rules about life and love. Here Margaret meets and marries her best friends brother, the most powerful man in Rio. Though he adores her, Erik Larson harbors his dark secrets from Margaret leaving her to find a unique identity of her own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, Well-developed Romance with Human Characters, October 11, 2002
This review is from: River of Dreams (Paperback)
River of Dreams was one of the first romances I stumbled across. Margaret's journey from girlhood through maturity remains one of the most engaging I have read after all these years. With disturbing and stark reality, we travel with her as she learns about love, tragedy and temptation. The pace of the writing varies, not always successfully, but the struggles of a woman trying to find her way through life, adultery and friendship never fail to intrigue the reader. The sensuality in the book heightens these relationships and augments the experience, rather than detracting from it, while at the same time providing tantalizing detail to the reader. The total package leaves you with a special place in your heart for the characters, vivid imagery of Brazil, and a desire to reread again and again.
