5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, deeply moving, June 9, 2007
This review is from: River Flow: New & Selected Poems 1984-2007 (Hardcover)
About ten years ago, a book of David's poetry literally fell of a bookshelf into my hands and had exactly the right poem in it for what I was going through at the time. Whyte's ability to reach into the heart and soul of whatever he is writing about is simply breathtaking. Needless to say, I was delighted to discover this collection of his writings. His works are beautifully crafted and rich with the kind of imagery and emotion that will stay with you.

I've had the pleasure of working with David Whyte in several workshops and it's such a thrill to see this compilation finally on the market! David's poems are quite powerful and are each works of beauty that move the soul in a very profuond way. This book contains his best work, including many new poems that will find their way into your heart. Get this book, but also check out his other volumes of poetry as well--you'll benefit greatly from his collected works!

4.0 out of 5 stars David Whyte is my new inspiration, December 7, 2007

I first discovered David Whyte while attending a workshop in Hawai'i. We watched a video of his presentation before a large corporate audience of "Heart Aroused." I had never heard poetry read in that way before. I was instantly drawn in. I must say that the only thing better than reading his works is hearing him in person. His audio CD's are amazing. I listen to him while I drive the 2 hours to the nearest big town in Montana. He inspires deep thinking and the desire for knowledge of self and the universe we live in.

5.0 out of 5 stars From 'In the Library Reviews', November 15, 2009

RIVER FLOW: NEW & SELECTED POEMS 1984 - 2007

"At times gentle and peaceful, at other times, turbulent and thundering, River Flow is a magnificent collection of poetry with a vibrant voice. This beautiful book contains over one hundred fifty poems, most garnered from the author's previous works, but also including twenty-three new compositions. The table of contents organizes the poems according to topics, while noting the name of the book in which it first appeared.

David Whyte has a confident command of words, causing them to leap with emotion while drawing vivid pictures in the mind. His poems touch several dimensions of thought, from the spiritual realm to the tangible world around us. The profound and the poignant take on a heightened perception when seen through the author's eyes.

The ability of poetry to decipher our modern world is made clear throughout this book, as ideas are expressed with elegance and intuitiveness. Using this genre allows a deeper and more meaningful expression of feelings, as the themes are sensitively encased in passionate prose and lyrical language. From the petals of a flower to the purpose of life's unpredictable pathways, these words tickle the mind with tantalizing tidbits of thoughts.

To this reviewer's delight, a section of the book is devoted to Ireland. The poetry clearly captures images of the people, the politics and the impassioned personalities that make up this culture. David Whyte's words are a welcoming embrace as the "hands across the water" reach out through these pages in a gesture of friendship and familiarity.

River Flow is a graceful journey, highlighting the ebb and flow of humanity as it drifts along on words of wisdom, compassion and understanding."
