Book Description

March 31, 2009
''There is a pathway traveled by migrants that cuts away from the Mexican border as it slithers north through the Arizona desert up to Interstate 8. Migrants know this highway as la Ocho, the road that takes them to a better life, but the trail that leads to that highway is ruthless and unforgiving.''
In Sonora, a group of immigrants circles around a coyote, Leonardo Cerda, who will for a price lead them across the treacherous desert to the United States. Fearful that Cerda may be one of those who will collect their money up front and then leave them stranded to die, the travelers ultimately are forced to put their trust in him and begin the dangerous crossing to a new life. Afraid even of each other, they initially avoid eye contact or conversation. But as the three-day passage across the blistering landscape progresses, the fight to survive the grueling trip ensures that their lives and deaths are linked forever.
While trudging along, placing one exhausted foot in front of the other, the travelers each remember their lives and the reasons they have been forced to abandon their land, homes and loved ones. Among the immigrants is Menda Fuentes, a salvadorena, the only member of her family to survive a massacre during her country s civil war. Then there is Julio Escalante and his young grandson Manuelito, who pay the full fee even though they plan to go only halfway. By their side is Encarnacion Padilla, an ancient indigenous woman who has survived ostracism and her involvement in the Zapatista uprising. Next to her walk Nicanor and Borrego Osuna, two brothers who suffer the ultimate indignity just to make it to the United States. Finally, there is Armando Guerrero, shifty, suspicious-looking, and clearly different from the rest because of his fancy clothes as well as the mysterious bag to which he clings.
In addition to confronting their own internal demons, they must also face the dangers that they encounter on the trail: poisonous snakes, debilitating dehydration and exhaustion, and a ferocious sandstorm that tears the group apart. This riveting novel explores the lives behind the news stories and confirms Limon's status as one of the country s premiere Latinas writing about issues that affect us all.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In this latest work from Limon, a small, disparate group of would-be immigrants hires coyote Leonarda Cerda to guide them from a Sonora border town across the desert into Arizona. The result is a sort of Canterbury Tales without the humor and buoyancy: initially, each traveler is alone in his or her own private world, but gradually, as they all tell their life stories, they come together in sorrow, tragedy, and impending death. While it is clear to the reader (and to the travelers) that few if any will survive the border crossing, the reader is still caught up in the individual stories and entertains a small vestige of hope for some sort of future.
VERDICT The stories here give faces to the news accounts we all read or watch daily from a distance. Thoughtful reading for anyone who wants socially engaged fiction.
Mary Margaret Benson, Linfield Coll. Lib., McMinnville, OR --Library Journal

The closing of easier routes through California has driven migrants to the United States from Mexico and Central America to make a dangerous crossing through the
Arizona desert. One wrong turn can lead to dying of thirst; one false step can lead to a deadly snake or scorpion bite.

Limon, the author of several other novels set in Mexico or along the border, narrates the story of a group of travelers-almost all complete strangers- who cast their lot with the experienced smuggler Leonardo Cerda. Among them are Julio and
his son, Manuelio, who only want to go halfway, and the elderly Lacandona woman Encarnacion Padilla, who seeks the spirits of those previously lost on the
crossing. Menda Fuentes, a Salvadoran woman has survived both her country's civil war and an abusive husband. Nicanor and Borrego Osuna are teenage Mexican brothers seeking a better life in the United States. Finally, there is the well-dressed stranger, Armando Guerrero, of whom everyone is afraid.

Each of the characters tells his or her story, past and present. Each plays a
critical role at some point in the journey, so the shifting point of view add to the suspense. This short, fast-paced novel is rooted in real experiences and will be of interest to readers, high school and up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Respectful yet jarring, August 9, 2011

The literary equivalent of a cross marking a shallow grave, Limon respectfully yet jarringly depicts a ragtag group of immigrants who must survive a nightmare in order to reach the American dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book!, June 20, 2011
This review is from: The River Flows North (Hardcover)
I think when you are into this whole latino/a literature this book is worth to be read. Without anticipating the storyline I can only say that things dont necessarily happen as expected which creates a lot of tension and curiosity.Instead of laying it aside, you just want to continue reading it. Just read it and while you do so, enjoy your time!
