Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I'm a little bit of a fan of the River King series and for $20 I couldn't pass on this game. If you haven't played a River King game then what you're in for is a hybrid of fishing and RPG gameplay or to be more specific if you've played a Harvest Moon game replace the farming for fishing. The game doesn't have a whole lot of story or direction, you're basically thrown in to the world, you fish, gain levels, get better stuff, and do an occassional side quest to move on like winning a fishing tournament or catching a specific fish for somebody. Fishing is impossible to screw up, it comes down more or less to having the proper equipment in the proper location more so than any skill being a factor. You would almost have to try to not catch a fish. The game feels very sterile, everything is very quiet and serene and the graphics are very minimal so it tends to have me yawning before too long. There's over 100 fish to catch and several different areas to fish in that are all geographically defined ie. stream, river, lake... If they had implemented some more solid progression in this game it would have been much more fun but as it is makes it good only to pick up every now and then.

Probably a pass for most people but if you dig Harvest Moon or previous River King titles then the game is cheap enough to make it worth it.

The graphics have a dated look to them. Indeed, it would seem that the game may actually predate "Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life", in which the the fishing channel calls the boy "Nick". You have to name your character (typical of all titles within the Harvest Moon series) at the beginning of the game. Many of the of the other characters in the town are simply called "Man" or "Woman". While this is a bit of a shortcoming, it is not real focus of the game. The real focus is fishing. This is where the game does well. I've played many games which involve fishing at some level, but this is one of the few in which fishing is the primary focus. Now if you looking for a game with a "real" fishing experience to it, move along. However, if you are looking for whimsical fishing adventure, this may just be what you are looking fun. From the self declared rival Naoko to dad and his dream of catching the elusive "River King", there is a lot of fun to be had. One factor that makes the game interesting is that, unlike the Harvest Moon titles, this game requires you to have bait to fish, and you will either have to find or buy bait. Couple in the fact that the fish do not sell for much, and it becomes a game of balancing resources and working hard to catch the elusive "River King".

Aside for the dated graphics, this game really is quite enjoyable and has a good replay value. Too bad Natsume didn't consider an updated release for the PS3.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as Harvest Moon games, but is neat! March 12, 2010

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I tried a game of this once and enjoyed it and saw that they had a game of it for the Playstation 2 which i had bought not too long ago. I like a few of the harvest moon games and enjoy rpgs, so when I saw there was a fishing game that was an RPG with better graphics than the old gameboy I just had to buy the game. It is cool because it has a good button action on catchign the fish no continual punching the buttons like on some games I have tried (get tired of pushing the buttons fast to play a game wearing out the fingers.) its easy to find worms but not as much action to understand what is going on. took me a while to figure out i could quickly find worms just standing in one spot having it spam the different messages saying if you found something or not.The game is ok, but like I said it acts more like a more simpler game and really takes getting used to if you are more used to playing natsume's Harvest Moon games.

Fun, fun and more fun, the story line is adorable and your character (which you choose) is cute. You open different towns and meet different people and complete different challenges. The fishing is so much fun and you solve mysteries, save love and you even cook. Loved the game.
