Very Inspiring!!,

I wish they would have more music like this. I am very pleased to know that this kind of music is still around. Artist seemed to have gotten away from real singing, but this is talent at its best. It is so inspiring, moving, and captivating to listen to. It makes you feel the singer and the message that is being conveyed. I heard this one song on The Civil War video, (Jacobs Ladder) and it completed that series perfectly.

Psalms of Sorrow and Praise,
This review is from: River of Life: Harmony One (Audio CD)
Dr. Reagon tells the truth about the journey we are all on (whether we know it or not). I hope to "stand on the shore" with her when this phase of reality is over.Much gospel music deals with praise but Dr. Reagon gets down into the sorrow that life throws at us when it is our time of testing. We all need music for the deep valleys as well as the peaks. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this wonderful CD and this inspiring woman who created it. God will bless anyone who listens.

The Real Deal,

Gospel doesn't get any better than this! It's the real deal. SO moving --and even more so when you think about the unspeakable oppression that elicited this profound expression.

After hearing Climbing Jacobs Ladder in the soundtrack of Ken Burns' groundbreaking documentary The Civil War, I set out to find out where I could hear more of same. The documentaries credits listed only one name, Bernice Johnson Reagon. I found this odd considering the music was ensemble accapella, but it only added to the intrigue.I soon learned that it was a tour de force of overdubbing her single voice that brought about those little chills that went down my back and bought tears to my lily white eyes everytime I heard Ladder. This album is a masterpiece on so many levels. Her committment to faithfully recreate the music of the fields and of the Baptist church with her voice as the sole instrument (with occasional hand claps or foot stomps)is a coup in itself. But this is a record that will teach you the true roots of American music and clearly demonstrate that beautiful transcendant music can be born of unspeakable travail & suffering. If you'll only let it. Thank you Bernice. This is art for the ages.
