4.0 out of 5 stars Awww, yeah - Steve James is the MAN!, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Riverbend [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie IS pretty over the top at times (at times?), although a lot of that's because of the overdone score (sorry, Paul Loomis). Still, it's pretty fun and, despite being directed by the guy who did "Ninja III: The Domination," actually occasionally touches on some interesting racial issues. It kind of reminded me of "Rosewood," except that instead of being a completely dishonest distortion of an actual historical event, it's a fictional invention (about some soldiers back from Vietnam to face a court martial for not wanting to kill unarmed civilians, who then escape and hole up in a small Southern town where the black people are being oppressed by a vile, corrupt, racist sherrif), and so it could take whatever license it deemed necessary to create a solid entertainment. Margaret Avery, I gotta say, is pretty darned hot in this - no wonder Steve James' character goes 'boi-oi-oi-oinggg!' when he first lays his eyes on her. Mmmm-hm!
