5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely charming stories that are good for the soul., June 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Riverhouse Stories: How Pubah S. Queen and Lazy LaRue Save the World (Paperback)
Upon the first read, I was actually disappointed with this book, mainly because it wasn't what I had expected it to be. But I went back to it and fell in love with it. I have read these stories again and again. So simple yet sophisticated. They are gentle, loving, warm, feel good stories that remind you to celebrate the joy of living. I return to this book when I feel down and it always brightens my spirit. It has remained a constant favorite since the early 1990's.

5.0 out of 5 stars peace & magic, December 26, 1998
This review is from: The Riverhouse Stories: How Pubah S. Queen and Lazy LaRue Save the World (Paperback)
I had the pleasure to work with Andrea Carlisle as a student, and her very sincere personality shines throughout the pages of this book. Lazy LaRue and Pubah dance liltingly and gaze at the world with one another, one foot slightly in reality but always light-heartedly. These are two women who really love their lives, and through deceptively simple description and dialogue (the characters sneak up on you with subtle epiphanies on existence!), you learn to perhaps appreciate your own world more. I do dearly reccomend this well-loved book------ it is peaceful, loving, and a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of those books..., January 21, 2011
This review is from: The Riverhouse Stories: How Pubah S. Queen and Lazy LaRue Save the World (Paperback)
This is one of those books that I have bought numerous copies of (used in most cases since it was out of print when I first read it), that I have passed on to others to pass on to others, all of whom have loved the book. I've read it several times, and it's part 'getting along in a relationship', part 'adventures in daily life', part 'becoming a writer' and best of all, it is all sweetness and humble reality on a houseboat.

It is not a book for your ultra-conservative friends, though I'd be tempted to send it to mine - the main characters are two women in love, which is not what the story is about. It's about love, getting along, people, animals, adventures on a river, writing, being an electrician. I wrote to the author in the early 90's to let her know how much I enjoyed the book, and to give you a sense of how humble the story is, and it's author - she replied with "Where did you find it!?" - as I said, it had been out of print for a few years and apparently sales weren't that good. Hopefully I increased her sales and I like to think I had something to do with the book being reprinted and still available.

It's river-paced writing, light and enjoyable and will make you smile. It is thought provoking without being mucky with sentiment, and it celebrates love and idiosyncracies. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars magical and profound!, February 15, 2005
This is one of my favorite books--it is simple and childlike and deeply magical at the same time. It is like Winnie the Pooh for adults--or it could be read to children too. I am not sure what happened to this unique and wonderful writer--I sure wish she would write something else!

Great bedtime stories to read to yourself or someone you love.
