5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for., August 28, 2006

I first heard Autumn's Grey Solace through a projekt label sampler. If you are not very familiar with the projekt label, I highly recommend picking one up. That is how I came about buying this album. After getting hooked on Mira, I began looking for some other music that was similar. On Mira's self titled album, they do a cover of a My Bloody Valentine song, so I picked up that album. That kind of got me on the "shoegazer dreampop" path, which ultimately led me to this album. In comparison to music of it's like, I would have to rate this album at the top. Since I've had this album, I always start playing it when I go to bed, and usually am asleep by track 4 or 5. And I have always had a terrible time falling asleep right away. It is a great album to listen to for enjoyment, relaxation, contemplation and reflection, or to fall asleep to.

I've purchased many albums trying to find the best of this type of music, including: Mira, Cocteau Twins, Autumn's Grey Solace, Love Spirals Downwards, Collide, Rhea's Obsession, Love Is Colder Than Death, Unto Ashes, Lycia, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, This Ascension, Trance To The Sun, Tapping The Vein, Audra, Slowdive, Dark Sanctuary, and My Bloody Valentine. I would have the rate the best of the best to be Autumn's Grey Solace - Riverine, Slowdive - Souvlaki, Mira - Mira and Mira - Apart, and Cocteau Twins - Victorialand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life, December 8, 2008
This review is from: Riverine (Audio CD)
This was my first Autumn's Grey Solace album, in fact, one of the first shoegaze/dreampop albums I have ever owned. It wrongfully received a lot of bad receptions. In my opinion, due to misunderstanding of the music itself. Autumn's Grey Solace does not have the typical purpose that many shoegaze and ethereal musical artists may have, but they retain the same influence.
When I first listened to this album, it was a shocking and alien experience to me, being a fan of mostly extreme metal and industrial music. I did own a few Cocteau Twins and Slowdive albums at the time, so i wasn't unfamiliar with ethereal music.
This however struck me differently. I know that most ethereal shoegaze is very enigmatic and often reflective of nature in an almost accidental way. Riverine, however, was obviously TRYING to capture this ambiance. The guitar textures are drenched, and create a wilderness of notes that are stark and at the same time full of life. Erin's vocals are youthful and sweet, and compliment the guitars perfectly.
But the combined imagery is what caught me. In this album it is so whole and complete. The life in it is tangible to the point of almost scent and sight.
DOn't deprive yourself of this release, it is magic through and through. But don't expect or compare it to the droning and seasick loveliness we have all come accustomed to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shimmery dreampop, September 16, 2005
This review is from: Riverine (Audio CD)
If you like your dreampop with swirly guitars and gossamer female vocals, this is the cd for you. Bask in the bliss.
