Editorial Reviews

You're in good hands with this retrospective, as Riverside co-founder and producer Orrin Keepnews himself programmed and annotated this four-CD set! Riverside only existed for nine years, but was THE hard bop label during its time; you'll also find more commercial fare like Mongo Santamaria's Watermelon Man among the set's 53 tracks. Also includes Brilliant Corners Thelonious Monk; Four on Six Wes Montgomery; The Freedom Suite Sonny Rollins; Things Are Getting Better Cannonball Adderley; Meditation (Meditacio) Charlie Byrd; Work Song Nat Adderley; Invitation Milt Jackson, and more from Randy Weston, Clark Terry, George Russell, Wynton Kelly, Coleman Hawkins, Abbey Lincoln and other greats.

Riverside Records was one of the greatest jazz labels in music history and this boxed-set represents the label and it's artists very well. Back in the vinyl days I used to buy any jazz record with the Riverside label. Thelonious Monk is my favorite but there are many jazz greats represented. These CD's are well mastered too, they all sound clear, sharp and deep. A great set.

There isn't a dud in the bunch and this is a broad survey of a label with seminal musicians. In particular, the collaborations are standouts. Who would of thought Ben Webster and Joe Zawinul would hit it off so well. Then there is the "tenor battle" gem, "TickleToe" featuring Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis with Junior Mance on piano. The battle is one of the most thrilling (and swinging) displays of sheer technique I've ever heard. When I was in high school, my copy of "Tough Tenors" hardly ever left the the "play pile." I would have sold my soul to play like either of these guys. All four discs are solid and packed with gems. This one is definitely worth the investment.

This is a very comprehensive overview of Riverside Records.
If anything maybe Orrin Keepnews played it a bit safe.
A few of lesser known artists could have been included.
