I don't know why Cabell isn't considered one of America's finest novelists, up there with Mark Twain. This isn't one of his most interesting - it's a book that, like The Cords of Vanity, has not the slightest trace of fantasy in it, despite being part of the Biography of Manuel. But it represents the same approach to the relations between the sexes that Jurgen does. Amazingly, for a book wholly about marriage and human society, I couldn't put it down, and read the second half between 2 and 3 in the morning.

This book was listed under humor and, looking for a lighthearted comedy, I downloaded it. All I can say is, I'm sure glad I didn't pay for it. If there is humor here I couldn't find it.
