Here We Go Again - Celebrating the Genius of Ray Charles

Biography

Is it possible to be a successful purveyor of country music and Americana and still be a long-haired, pot smoking, environmentalist, liberal hippie? Willie Nelson is and always has been. His perpetually unshaven beard, long hair - frequently braided Indian style - American flag head scarf or cowboy hat and red, white and blue guitar straps are as visually recognisable as his deep, raw, warbley… Read more in Amazon's Willie Nelson Store

1.0 out of 5 stars What a huge disappointment!, March 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: On the Road Again (Audio CD)
This is a live album. The song selections are great, but the sound quality of the recording is terrible... really hollow sounding and tinny. It sounds like a bootleg recording that they got by putting a tape recorder in the bottom of a garbage can located next to the stage. Don't waste your money on this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great Live CD, July 16, 2004
This review is from: On the Road Again (Audio CD)
I think the other reviewer of this CD was too harsh. I was introduced to this CD by a friend of mine a while back, and I have always really enjoyed it.

The songs are all live, and therefore may not have the best 'quality' if you're comparing it to studio recordings. If you like live music, however, this disc has some great renditions of some Willie Nelson classics. I'd even go so far as to say the way these songs are recorded - with crowd and bar noise - lends itself perfectly to the mood of these great songs.

For example, the version of On the Road Again is fantastic as you can hear the crowd cheering and singing along, making the line "the life I love is making music with my friends" that much more honest and meaningful. There are countless similar spots on this album where you feel like you're onstage with Willie in a small bar in the Southwest, reminiscing about the times you've had. There are several tracks on this two-disc set that come close to bringing me to tears every time I hear them.

Musically, it's great as well. The arrangement of City of New Orleans, Angel Flying Too Close To the Ground and the Crazy medley are, in my opinion, better than any other arrangements of these songs that I've heard.

It's not a critics pick, that's for sure. If you want soulless studio recordings, look elsewhere! But if you are particularly moved by live music, and don't mind the gentle squeak of guitar strings, I would highly recommend this one.
