Book Description

August 12, 1986
"Read Kuralt's words and discover America with him."
UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
He has entertained and informed us about ourselves on television for years. Taking to the highways, he has met the little-known and the famous, and shared them with the rest of us. This heartwarming book reminds us again of some of the extraordinary people he has met over the years in words and photographs, and provides the exact words of the interviews, so that we can permanently enjoy his visits with people we have come to know and care for, again and again.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kuralt, Charles. On the Road with Charles Kuralt. Putnam. Sept. 1985. c.269p. photogs. LC 85-6330. ISBN 0-399-13087-X. $15.95. soc sci ~ Both of these TV journalists (Kuralt with CBS and Dotson with NBC) have roamed the continent for years seeking offbeat human interest stories. Kuralt has been doing it longer and better than most. His vignettes of Americana are invariably humorous, succinct, historically accurate, and often poetic. In this second collection of TV episodes to appear in print, the blend of narration and script enables the reader to easily visualize the scenes. It is storytelling at its best. For Dotson, this is a first effort at expanding his TV tales into book form. His stories tend to focus more on the human spirit as exemplified by the courage, perseverance, sacrifices, and kindnesses of the common person to reach uncommon goals. His work is more sober but not lacking in amusement. Both are good choices for public libraries and those desiring a good dose of what's right with America. Sondra Brunhumer, Western Michigan Univ. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories of everyday people who inspire and amuse, September 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: On the Road with Charles Kuralt (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a wonderful book that recaptures the many stories from his on the road segments for TV. He finds the most interesting people and places; his stories tell of the inner passions of ordinary people. Another great book with similar stories--and great pictures--is Positively Connecticut by Diane Smith. She says she was inspired by Kuralt's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved re-discovering America with Charles Kuralt!, July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: On the Road with Charles Kuralt (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading this book, I felt a sense of renewal and satisfaction that there are still candles lending their beams to the world. I picked up this book for a report at school. I thought that it would be just another boring book that we are often forced to read in school. Wrong-O! I loved it! From the team that had lost every single one of its games to the train depot that served soldiers during WWII, I found myself emersed in each of the stories. Each of these average Americans had a not so average story to tell...

Charles Kuralt had the gift of seeing a story in the littlest thing. He took the thread of everyman's life and wove a tapestry of America and then gave it as a gift to us.
