Reflecting on Benedict,
By
This review is from: The Road to Eternal Life: Reflections on the Prologue of Benedict's Rule (Hardcover)
This is easily one of the best books I've ever read on the Rule of Benedict, and it's no surprise coming from one of the best writers on the planet today, Michael Casey.50 short and easy to read chapters each focus on one of the verses in the Prologue to Benedict's Rule. Each one has so much wisdom and insight, but for me two of the best in the entire book are #2, OVERCOMING SLACKNESS, and #8, RISE UP FROM SLEEP. They both echo one of the recurring themes in the book, namely that walking the road to Eternal life takes perseverance and some effort. Casey writes from the perspective of the monk, but any lay person will benefit richly from each chapter and be encouraged to walk with Christ in a more diligent and purposeful way. Just a couple of examples: .."the major obstacle to spiritual growth is inactivity, taking things easy, letting things look after themselves."(pg.15 "The sign of a holy upright person is a concordance among thought, word, and action." (pg.92) One of the best yet from Liturgical Press!

This review is from: The Road to Eternal Life: Reflections on the Prologue of Benedict's Rule (Hardcover)
Once again Casey is on the mark. This Trappist monk can get more profound meaning out of a few words than anyone I have ever read, especially as it relates to how to live your life. Chapter after chapter if filled with practical common sense direction. I have read some commentaries on the Rule that frankly can put you to sleep, not this one. It's profound without being deep. This monk speaks to everyman. I have read several books by Michael Casey, all 5 star and this one is in that catagory. This would be a good choice for any Benedictine Oblate and especially for novices. Highly recommended.
