Well-lived lives in every song, July 4, 2002
This review is from: Road of the Gypsies (Audio CD)
Even if you can't find this collection on Amazon, seek this one out. If you already know gypsy music, you'll strike gold here. If you don't know gypsy music... this is gut-wrenchingly powerful stuff, a wide range of folk music that could only have come out of the historical cauldron of Southeastern Europe. The sounds here range all the way from the firey brass band jazz of the Balkans to smokey, soulful diva-like trances (think Cesaria Evora or Edith Piaf) from the Paris Hot Club tradition. You'll savor every performance here. Bonus -- the best available version of Bjelo Dugme leader Goran Bregovic's "Ederlezi," which you might remember from the powerful Yugoslav movie, Time of the Gypsies. Bravo to Network for putting this series out
