Book Description

The world that Glushanovsky paints is wonderfully-saturated with elements from all over the fantasy genre—though this is not simply a tale of sword and sorcery. These classical fantasy figures are well-executed and have the sensibility of a seasoned Russian fantasy novel, especially since this is part of a tetralogy previously published in Russia. Readers of George R.R. Martin, Raymond Feist and Stephen R. Donaldson will adore THE ROAD TO MAGIC.

There are exciting parallel narratives at work in THE ROAD TO MAGIC. On one level we have the handsome playboy Oleg Davidov as a modern-day college student; on another level we have Oleg the demon savior of the princess; and on another level, Oleg the monster hunter. Like Harry Potter, Oleg was once a normal boy until he is magnificently transformed into something supernatural, which is later used as a commentary/comic relief tool once Oleg is a demon. That’s what you get when you dabble in magic with a demoness. Rarely does Oleg ever approach the world of fantasy as an outsider—in fact he feels right at home in that world. After Oleg resolves the princess’s plight, he then takes off to learn magic at the university—but not before Oleg can slay some monsters in a few Herculean feats on his way to becoming a student of magic. Readers will also learn a lot about Russian pop-culture from reading THE ROAD TO MAGIC. The complex story, moving along at a brisk pace, presents an intelligent take on the nature of fantasy gods and the human relationship to both gods and monsters.

Glushanovsky expertly draws raw, compelling characters with depth and surprising twists. No one is more real than Oleg, the multi-dimensional main character who is one of the most original and engaging characters you’ll encounter. Glushanovsky's references to pop-culture gives the book a fascinating window into the youth of today. It's one of the many things about THE ROAD TO MAGIC that sets the book apart from all the Tolkein and Robert Jordan clones that have flooded the fantasy market. This, plus the strong character of Oleg, gives the book a delightful and engrossing feel, making it a totally unique work of fantasy.

About the Author:
Alexey Glushanovsky is a respected fantasy author in Russia and THE ROAD TO MAGIC is a unique novel written in an engaging style that is conversational and intimate. He received the "Eurasia" award in 2011 for HEART OF THE BLIZZARD. He is one of the top thirty writers in Russia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great work from a new author. February 18, 2013

The story of The Road to Magic follows Oleg Davidov, a play-boy college student who dabbles in magic and inadvertently sacrifices his life and body to a powerful flame Elemental. The Elemental, or Clear Flame is touched by his sacrifice (the first of its kind in a few centuries) and decides to reincarnate him in her realm in a new body, the body of a greater demon. Once Oleg comes to, being the young man that he is, he is immediately enthralled by the gorgeous Elemental. Oleg is informed however that he cannot pursue any physical relationship with her because to do so would immolate him, unless that is, he can either become a powerful enough Mage to resist the flames, or become a fully-fledged demon, and thus gain immunity to her flames. Oleg decides to pursue the former, therefore Clear Flame returns his old body to him (making him a part-demon shapeshifter) and tells him to answer a demon summoning in a world where magicians, or magic universities to be precise, are common so that he may gain the knowledge he needs to resist her flames.

Plot - 4.5/5
The plot is fairly interesting and while there are a few decisions that he hero makes which are a bit strange, the story is still intriguing enough to hold your interest. There is plenty of action with a sprinkling of romance and a big heap of adventuring.

Characters - 4/5
The characters are for the most part fully fleshed-out and interesting, there are however a few that are pretty flat but they are few and far between. The protagonist is fairly interesting and his (mis)adventures (not to mention his snide remarks) are full of humor.

Grammar & Editing - 4/5
For a first book the grammar is consistently good, but as always, the lack of a professional editor is evident every now and then. I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome the Russian invasion March 1, 2013
Verified Purchase
If this is an example of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy writers from Russia; then, bring on the russian invasion. I rarely write reviews despite reading 200-300 books a year. But; this book actually grabbed me and kept me engaged all the way through. Since I became disabled; I spend most of my days reading and have become somewhat jaded about what's available. This was a breath of fresh air and a wake up call. I was sad the book ended and want more NOW. But; I will gladly wait for writing of this quality. By the way; I liked the way the author left so many threads laying around that he can weave into future plot lines. It gives so many possibilities to the character development; but, managed to maintain a good flow to the first book. You deserve a good read. This is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars More info about this book April 17, 2013
By Kosta
Hey Guys
I have good news
Right now there are 6 chapters of this book (Way of the Demon Series).
They are finished 2 or 3 years ago.
Well at least I read last one 2 years ago.
As far I know Mr. Glushanovsky writing right now one more small seria (3 books) - about sister of Oleg. 2 books already finished and last one still in process.
And the bad news is:
Mr. Glushanovsky are Russian writer and all his books are in Russian language. So its hard to say when he will translate rest of the books (translate even one books is not cheap and fast).
If you cant wait you can copy Russian version and put in Google translator for english version. But i dont think it will be so good as a professional translation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth it to kill time April 8, 2013

Demons, Magicians, Necromancers, elves, and even vampires- The Road to Magic provided enough entertainment and peaked my interest to finish this book and "eagerly await the next installment". The overall read of this book was nice because it allowed the reader to use his/her own imagination to fill in gaps. Glushanovsky does not over rely on back story but allows the reader to make his/her own inferences, thus allowing a reader, like myself, to create a stronger affinity to our hero, Oleg.

I like to to divide this book into 4 stages...

**Pre-demon stage: Oleg, our main character, is human and makes his transition into his new, supernatural life.

Good: This was fun. It was short, not overly wordy, and didn't take excessive time describing the ins-and-outs of our character.

Bad: For several pages I wasn't sure if this was a world where magic was abundant or scarce, only to later to assume this was actually modern day Earth. In this very short stage of the book, perhaps more description about the setting, could have been utilized. Eventually, we do transition to another world where magic, demons, etc are more common.

**Demon/Princess stage: Oleg helps a princess attempt to escape the clutches of her evil uncle and take proper rule of her kingdom.

Good: Character development for the princess and Oleg was excellent for me.

Bad: Totally cliche. Very boring. Very predictable. I had to plow through this entire section of the book (skip a page, look for some key words, skip a page, read a paragraph, skip a page, look for more key-words). I was almost ready to just put the book down and say, "hey, it was only $2.99".

1.0 out of 5 stars Have read better
It seemed that the same story line was repeated over and over. Once you were through the first couple of chapters, you were pretty much through the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very original take on sword and sorcery novels
Definitely worth a read. The translations can be a bit off on somethings (the original work is in russian). The pacing of the story is good with no real lulls in the action. Read more

the Way of the Demon
Read this book in a day, can't wait for the next one. I got so desperate I downloaded the Russian version of book 2 and used a translator. It's a pain to read but still worth it. Translated it's called Dark Faculty.
