Book Description

March 10, 2008
A doom prophet wanders through the woods announcing the end of the world. A 300-pounf hiker drop half his body weight because all he can afford is oatmeal. A dysentery-infected Mormon tries to steal a dog from a private detective. A stoic woodsman smacks a bear across the snout with a flaming brand. Two hikers wander into a hyper religious commune in upstate New York and find out where all the soap in the world is made. A Road More or Less Traveled is the strange but true tale of two men who set out to hike the Appalachian Trail, America's most heralded footpath, extending over two thousand miles from Maine to Georgia. Along the way, they find uncouth beauty, collide head-on with America's churning technocracy, and battle through a faith in the ruins. Road is a story filled with adventure, absurdity, laugh-out-loud humor and gnarly soul searching. You should read it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I wish all trail books were as well written as this one. --Linda Patton, booksforhikers.com

Inspiring, a peregrination filled with staggering uncertainty, uncouth confessions and untamed beauty. The page turning adventures of Futureman and Applejack beckon us to slow the pace and ask questions regarding the nature of humankind. --P.A. Shaw, Regent

Easily the strangest A.T. book I have ever read, and I mean that in the best possible way. Just the crawfish discussion in New York was worth the price of the book. --Dr. Doom

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!, January 29, 2010

This review is from: A Road More or Less Traveled: Madcap Adventures Along the Appalachian Trail (Paperback)
This is a terrific book. The authors captured the essence of the trail experience, leaving me feeling like I was walking the AT with them. The story was informative, funny, and thought provoking. I could see the Cohen Brothers making a great movie from this storyline. As I read through the book over a few days, I found myself looking forward to being out on the trail with Futureman and Applejack, and I did not want the journey to end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an amusing and enriching story about people, places, and relationships in this journey through Americana along the Appalachian Trail. I hope they will write a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best AT memoirs, December 13, 2011
This review is from: A Road More or Less Traveled: Madcap Adventures Along the Appalachian Trail (Paperback)
This is a fantastic read. They do such a great job of blending very usable information about the trail with an entertaining and almost unbelievable narrative of their own thru-hike. Definitely the most underrated AT memoir out there.

These guys are beyond funny. This is more than a great AT story. If your sense of humor is slighly off kilter, you will be in heaven. Very well done!
